Good to see you are not rushing into anything with this! I'm sorry, I'm going to be Dad here, you will be spending a big chunk of wedge on this engine rebuild, I really hope you have done your homework about who ever you have booked with: Have they got solid VAG experience - better still rebuilt an AVY engine before? Do they have good reputation? - googled for reviews? How long will they take? - if they don't know what they are doing a few weeks can very quickly turn into months What guarantee will they provide for workmanship and materials? Not being funny, the fact they can fit an engine rebuild into their schedule within a week or 2 would not be a tick in the box ....that is unless the situation was really desperate. As already said by a few of us, you have good compression, your current oil leak is not terminal, your situation is a long way from desperate - probably just requires a head rebuild alone Just as an example, I enquired at a very good garage about getting a bottom end rebuild done for mine, they were happy to take on the job, but couldn't book it in for 2 or 3 months.

I would hold onto the manifold and system. All the other manifolds are a lot smaller diameter runners - but better than the puny standard manifold, not much bigger diameter than my thumb!

£200 for the spoiler is a lot - that and paint, I would have been tempting to commission one out of carbon! Mk4 Golf has similar roof trims - only ever lost one from my daily in a car wash

A 50% increase in price since 2010, could it be any or all of the following: inflation Brexit devaluation of £ VW needing to paying for litigation losses (that is everywhere else but UK) due to diesel gate VW knowing you are stuck, where else are you going to find these new I think in future, I will grab any I see in a scrap yard - they are the same across the range?

Nice looking Gti, was it a local car to Inverness? Yeah - the PO of mine had fitted the same to mine, he said it was too loud and got a 100 cell cat installed. Its just about right for me - on mine with a cam over 7K the sound is nuts!

A little oil burning isn't a problem that needs to be rushed, it will still drive fine. Rather than rushing, take a bit of time to save cash and to find someone good and reliable to do the work - in the meantime enjoy your Gti

That engine looks familiar! -
I reckon the enki’s are the obese ones, but not by much over the superligerra’s

very nice - good clearance on the ~Wilwoods too

Welcome - clean looking Gti you have there - in that picture is the cast of GOT about to jump out from the bushes?

Have to say the engine / chassis leg relationship is probably the worst I have worked on in a VAG car! - glad you are sorted
-
But where is the fun in that? 1.8t engines and boxes are a good bit easier to source than W12 bottom half of the doors and the bonnet -less exhaust holes look original, otherwise its been squashed
-
May I take second dibs on these if Sausage declines - I could rebuild using my current AP inserts
-
Try BBA Reman

I actually removed the lock mechanism off the Lupo, did a full brake clean to get rid of the caked on copper grease and re-grease with regular grease, since then it has been very easy to open and the bonnet properly pops up. The cable is in 2 parts with a joint at the inner wing, you can split the cable here and see what half has resistance - I would try spraying some lube inside the cable cover. if that doesn't work it seems to be heading towards new cable. Have to say mine had no visible faults or recall any friction, maybe they just stretch?? You could try replacing one half at a time... but suspect you are probably cheesed off with this and it may just be better to replace the whole thing

Not sure if I follow what you are saying? I was suggesting practic8ng on a car in a scrap yard, remove and reinstate the belt just to gain knowledge and confidence. What parts are you looking for?
-
Let’s just hope your compression is good, but whatever way forward you take it will require timing belt - how long ago was it done? Timing belt is an intimidating job, but if you take your time and it’s not that bad. I’m not sure I would go as far as getting an entire engine to practice with - just go to a scrap yard and practice/research, if you make a mess it doesn’t matter. pretty much any 16v polo or lupo is the same timing belt set up as AVY. Youtube has loads of films, watch as many as you need till it makes sense. Best advice I ever found for timing belts is mark with nail varnish the timing marks and the same timing mark positions on the old belt. Copy these marks onto the new belt, important thing here is number of teeth, this overcomes stretch and should stop being a tooth out - engine runs, but drive like poo.

Try fuel filter, take your time with the clips, they press in. Going on what you have already shown us, chances are the filter hasn’t been changed in a very long time. From digging on here, it’s 4 years or 40k (whatever comes first) between cambelt changes -fry not to put it off for long
