Gti Cam Belt

I wish the 3 letter word search worked wink.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

There is no time scale on when it should be changed.

The belt should be checked regularly, (ie. every service) and replaced when theres the slightest sign of wear.

There is a limit on the maximum time before changing, which I forget if its 50 or 60'000 miles.

The VW garage i just spoke to advised that it was 40k or 4 years... i just wanted a second opinion.

Anyway can't avoid it... needs doing. wacko.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

ALL VW cambelts and tensioners are now 4 years regardless of mileage! this is especially important with the 16v design engines that use plastic tensioners!

Its been reduced down to 4 years / 40k now. Was changed a few months back.

But like Andi said, it should be checked every year.

My cambelt change & 50k service cost me £385 in total.

Cam belt isn't covered under warranty though is it? I'd be very surprised if it is TBH, though the chances of it going must be fairly slim.

My cam belt & service was around £400 from the local VAG specialist.

Im having my cambelt changed next week, is it worth changing the water pump at the same time?

Cam belt and tensioner are *definitely* covered. I made sure of it!

We're booking Jens GTi for a service in a couple of weeks and will be having the cambelt done at the same time. Is the water pump change based on mileage or age of the car? its on 33k and is a Sep 2001 car so now due for the cambelt.

how much extra are we looking at for the waterpump to be done too?
