GTI Timing Belt Change

Recommended Posts

How much have you all been charged for a timing belt change on a GTI, including tensioners, belts and water pump.

My local specialist is over £100 dearer than the VW dealer.

Just wondered what it cost everyone else.

My VW Dealer wanted £420 to change it.

Got it done at a specialist for considerably less, but I can't remember how much it was. I'll have a look for the invoice and post the price up.

Cam belt and tensioner's done for £225, Midland said there was no need to replace water pump. I know its best to do it on a Mk4 golf etc as they were made from plastic which could fail.

You get two years parts and labour warranty with the dealer.

To me, paying the extra two hundred quid is worth it just for the security of the top end.

Strangely the dealer is a lot cheaper £290.00 inc all the parts.

Local specialist who I normally use is quoting £415.00 + vat.

I went to a VW specialist who did mine for £90 labour and I bought the parts from VW and a water pump for £130 trade....so £220 all in compared to the £500+ from Breeze Volkswagon

Would def get the water pump done but....only cost me an extra £22+vat in parts

Im changing mine this time around, it has to come off anyway so why not fit a new one.. i think prices vary due to all the differing labour costs at stealers also.

Just out of interest - on the GTI engine and whilst we're on the subject, Is the water pump driven by the Timing belt or by the Ancillary belt ?

Timing belt mate, thats why I cant understand why these places have not been changing it!

I asked for mine to get done, as i'd read on here, to change the water pump you have to remove the timing belt, so it kind of makes sense to do it when you change the timing belt. But i was told it will be ok and touch wood it has been fine for a year now and i trust the guy who deals with my car. If it goes, it goes i suppose
