My 2p:

Anything is only worth what people will pay for it. The aftermarket prices themselves dictate the value of the car, if the car won't sell then the price will drop. Who knows why the GTI has retained its value so well... my guesses are that it's unique, economic and nippy, well specified and if I'm honest a bit of a head turner for people interested in cars due to its rarity.

Why open a topic and not read the first post, this car clearly sold for a bargain, even less than it should have done really.

People clearly missing the point, There are about 10 GTi's on AT and PH and they've been there since before Xmas because they are over priced by a mile and now we are into Feb people are looking at those and pricing there's in the same region, the others aren't selling what makes people think theirs will sell at that price when there's better ones not selling at that price!!!

It's madness.

You've got to remember that it's this time of year where we've had Christmas, credit crunch etc. people aren't changing their cars this time of year.

this thread really is pointless wh do you care what price people have put on their car...

pay what YOU want to pay..

a seller will only sell for what THEY want to sell

do you go into tesco complaining that their beans are 8p dearer than asda's

do you go into your bp complaining that they fuel you bought in a different city was cheaper?

location, rarity, market competition, and condition will all come into a price,,,

if you dont want to pay it dont pay it simple as

Not always true, I'd buy a car this time of year if it was going to be cheaper now than 2 months previous/2 months later!

Lets all pick on the mk1 and mk2 escorts and their prices instead.

I was talking to a bloke who had just paid 22k for a mk2 , all be it a forest arched pinto on carbs stunning rebuild one with every extra under the sun.

But still 22k is a hefty chunk of wedge for what was once not so long ago selling for just a few K.

Good though the GTI may be, the used prices are higher than deserved, rare or not. However, they do tend to be owned by those that are genuine car buffs these days and should be in better overall condition than a Mini Cooper of similar age (a car that I believe knackered up the GTI sales).

The only way to push prices down, is for potential buyers to refuse to pay the inflated prices.

I'm gonna be buried in mine, so do what you wish. :)

The Time Team episode will be good when they dig you up in 1000 years time. What bizarre burial ritual will they conclude?

Lupo GTi 980kgs - Golf VR6 1180kgs, for your information.

As for handling, matter of opinion... I find the VR6 a lot easier to drive quickly. Good tyres and lower/stiffer suspension transforms the Mk3 platform. Once you get the hang of driving them they are a decent cross-country tool, I often go for drives out with stuff like Saxo VTS/106 GTi's, Civic Type R's and Leon Cupra R's, it has no problem keeping up, and is usually quicker to be honest! :)

I'm chopping it in for a Saxo VTS though. Really wanna do the French hatchback thing!

Buy my Golf VR6. Does everything a Lupo GTi does and more for 1.2k

My previous point was, compared to cars in it's class, it's massively overpriced.

without wanting to be hated.......

I agree with this, sometimes i look online at GTI's and think your having a laugh

yeah sure its an awesome little car i cant fault that but i do feel its hugely overpriced you see them with high miles and faults for still well over 6k.

Rare or not there overpriced....... especially on pistonheads

I think they are overpriced - considering what else you can buy for the money. 5-6k is BMW E36 M3 money, Integra Type R, Mitsi Evo 4/5, Scooby, Skyline, etc...

Although, I did own a Polo G40, which like the Lupo GTi, is hellishly expensive for what it is.

Well at least some people got the point of the topic and agreed although a great car, one that I own myself, it is overpriced by owners who cherish their car a tad too much.

TOPIC OVER

It's the desirability and rarity that gives them the price tag they have.

You could pull up to a car park full of high end cars and still get respect and almost fit in. You wouldn't get that in a Saxo or 106 or Clio 172. I guess it's the power of the VW GTi badge.

Whether they are a better car to drive and own to warrant the extra money is a matter of opinion.

It's like buying a pair of 100 quid jeans over a 20 quid pair. The 20 quid ones do the same job, probably just as well, but you've got a nice label on those 100 quid jeans.

Is this still going?

Simular story here with the cars I work on, Aston Martin DB4 GT looks exactly like a DB5, but slightly rarer, and a tiny bit faster, yet is worth 5 times as much, doesn't even have a boot or back seats. People want them cause they are seen as special. Then you can compare a DB6 with a DB5, DB6 is a better newer car, but had no accociation with James Bond, so is not as popular. They are still only cars, but one DB4 GT we have at the moment when finished would easilly sell for over a million at auction

If we still have cars in 30 years, the Lupo GTI will be a real rare collectors car.

Its not possible to overprice a car - unless you don't want to sell it.

Sellers don't determine the market value of a car - the buyers do. EVERYONE in the UK could decide to put their LupoGTi's up at £20k, doesn't meant they'll sell. The prices will keep dropping until the BUYERS decide what they want to pay.

Its true worth is personal opinion. If people don't think its worth it, buy something else, its pretty clear there are plenty of people who DO think its worth it. Otherwise they'd be cheaper!

I mean, I don't think a Porsche 964RS is worth £40-60k. I can email the seller, tell him its worth £20k tops, and he'll tell me where to shove it while another buyer gives him the asking price. Its basic economics of supply and demand. Fairly limited supply with high demand = higher prices.

Really is as simple as that.
