VAG COM

Recommended Posts

Unless you have a Genuine RossTech cable, Most of the recent versions of Vagcom, or VCDS as it is now known will not work at all. Some earlier versions will work with non-genuine cables but with very limited functionality i.e. Read/Erase fault codes and reset service light. Nothing more.

Shirley the non-genuine cables are ecactly the same as the ross-tech ones?

Mine didn't work either. Tried it on mine and a mates car, which were both showing fault lights, it did a scan and said no faults were found.

Cheap eBay ****e.

Wish I'd sent it back but I just put it in a drawer and forgot about it. :(

Surely the non-genuine cables are exactly the same as the ross-tech ones?

The Rosstech ones have a special chip inside with a coding on which allows you to use full functionality.

If you plug a non-ross tech cable into a computer with a propper copy of vagcom on you can only check error codes and virtually do nothing else.

i did exactly the same phil, my mates genuine cable broke though and the cheap ebay one worked as a replacement so the issue must be within the cheap software

It won't work for adaptions or anything though...

hey guys , i bought an obd2 lead from ebay to check an engine code, but iam finding it very hard to get VAG COM to work

i follow the instructions yet everytime i test the lead it doesnt recognise it...could anyone tell me how they made it work.

I'm about to buy one of these kits from fleabay myself, anyone have any pointers as to what version and what spec of VAGCOM kit to purchase?

I see at least two types (409.1 and 704.1)

Thanks

The USB ones are fine, Its just the people dont know how to use them.

You need the 409 or 311 for the USB leads. The newer version wont work.

You need to install this driver, Right click- Save as

It will install it on a com-port 1-4 hopefully. Then you use that com-port in vagcom.

Ive tried 3 cables and all have been fine ;)

So you're saying you can use it not only to read and delete error codes, but also to make adaptions, access measuring blocks and workshop coding ?

If so how come no Volkswagen specialists use cheep eBay leads?

Yes, yes & yes :)

Its not as simple as the proper ross tech lead but it helps the end user like us rather then paying a garage millions to clear and airbag light or somthing simple like that.

I used a cheap ebay one on my mates MK1 20VT to clear the codes, Read measuring blocks and made a few changes to throttle the position etc.

Using legal software mind, Not downloaded. The unregistered version will only read faults.

It is as simple as buying a genuine ross-Tech lead, comes with licence, and software is downloaded from site for free.

I have a clone version og v704 it wasn't eBay cheap, but alot cheaper than a genuine Ross-tech lead, still uses VCDS software. and it's fully functioning.

You may be able to get a 2nd hand Ross-tech lead from eBay, may still cost £200+.

The £10 eBay lead will read(with no description) and delete fault codes, and reset the SRI(doesn't work on a Lupo anyways!!)

V704 on use fully supported USB, no virtual comm's ports needed. Also fully Vista compatable.

It is very difficult to understand what you are doing, as most items are coded, little text to explain what the values mean regarding measuring blocks etc... Mostly documented though on the net, very very little for lupo's though.

Worth spending the money on a Ross-Tech lead IMO.

Well I'm on a recession-type budget. I've just completed an engine swap on a replacement Lupo gti for the one I wrote off in December and want to give it a check as my emissions light is on the dash.. and my contact over at the Skoda garage is too busy to let me in on the sly to use the comp.

I'll take my chances on the 409 from the bay..

My "cheap ebay crap" costing me 11quid inc, can do measuring blocks, ECU adaptations, read and reset codes, access comfort module and edit settings, ETC.

Thanks for notifying me in such a manner.

No probs. You said that only ross tech could do "EVERYTHING" when my 11 quid hong kong poo does the same. Just letting people know that ebay stuff does work.

As long as you use the right driver, and match it to the right com port away you go.

How am i lucky? It works because i made it work! Throwing money at the full ross tech doesnt mean its the b all and end all...
