Lupos gone to my brother now, so after a new car. Not after something immediatly, probably just after christmas, but keeping my eyes open for anything now. Got to be:

Around 3k (will push to 4 depending on insurance)

Fun

Around 80k, pref with FSH

Id like leather, but its not too much of a big deal.

Im really open to any suggestions, only looked at Bora/Golf V6 4motions and Alfa 147 2.0 Lussos so far, and liked them both, but open to anything.

What are you going to be using it for? How many miles are you going to be doing on average per week? Do you need to be carrying loads of stuff/people around?

Depending on what you want the car for depends on the type of car you should be looking for.

If you're doing megamiles, then look for diesels, etc.

Polo G40

Not doing many miles at the minute really. I get the bus into uni, and apart from at the weekends it sits on the drive, so its only a weekend toy.

I occasionally, once or twice a month, drive home, about 240 miles.

Ive considered Mk2's but there all getting on abit mileage wise, and I think spending over the odds on a car thats over 20 year old is a bit stupid when you can get a 5/6 year old alfa for the same money. Saying that, ive considered mkII MR2's!

Mk2s suffer from scene tax, they're stupid money for what they are.

Get a Corrado if you want something from that era, preferably a late spec one for the nicer interior. Much nicer all round car than a mk2, and a fantastic handling car... in my opinion. If you can afford the running costs are VR would be brilliant, but my 2.0 16v was ok, you'll find it quick enough coming from a 90bhp Lupo anyway, it's a teeny bit quicker than a Lupo GTi.

Polo G40 is very good fun, but very temperamental and very basic. It's a Renny 5 turbo with better build quality really!

MR2 Turbo?

Are FTO's fun?

I cant help thinking they look good but would be crap to drive.

Think im going to have to have a look at some MR2s, interior is naff, but should be a good drive.

Dunno, just saw one today and it looked quite tidy.

MR2 Turbo, spend the rest on insuring it - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/775657.htm

Lol, hes bit optimistic putting that in race cars section mind!

Might try and find a local FTO, I know theres a place local at home that specialises in FTO tuning, so might be worth a try, they'll be a bit biased mind.

Dont like the first shape A3, and thats the only model I could afford. Have considered Mk3 Ibiza Cupras, but there few and far between in my budget.

i've owned an mr2 turbo, personally i wouldn't own another. they are getting/have got to the age now where they are old and most are higher mileage, and when things go wrong they are expensive to fix. mine went bang after the radiator rusted and spat it's coolant out and the headgasket went warping the head and block. new engine = £1000.

other things to note are that the engine is a long way from the radiator and the pipework is getting old now, if it needs replacing it was stupidly expensive, a friend of mine had a £600 for the pipework, fitting, and expensive red toyota coolant which they need for some reason. also the t-bar seals need replacing if they haven't already as you will probably get wet when it rains, they were expensive too.

there is only 1 model of fto worth considering, that's the gpx mivec model which is 200bhp, and try and find a manual version if u can, not a crappy tiptronic model.

For £3k I'd look at the MKI Clio 172 to be honest.

0-70 in 7 seconds, 140mph, leather/alcantara, xenons etc. Very well spec'd car and enough performance to worry a whole load of more powerful cars. :) As long as its got the correct service history you shouldn't have any problems.

agree, 172's are awesome fun although need revving hard to get the best out of them. almost bought a 182 when i had my ibiza cupra, but the 182 felt gutless compared to the cupra (which admittedly was modified).

there are ibiza cupras available with low mileage for between 3 and 4k on autotrader, i recon u should go for one of them. great base for modifying to be quick.

G40 is a mk3 lol.

But your right...its still the same chassis as the mk1 and the mk2 and they all suffer from a rusty battery tray and a crack in the chassis behind the foot pedals behind the dash. Minor things to repair though.

I shall be getting a mk2 coupe s or a mk3 gt in the time to come. G40 is far too expensive to maintain.

In fact the main reason I sold my Lupo was so that I could buy a modern day reliable polo...save some money and run an older polo along side it.
