How good at driving are you?

hey!

How good at driving do you consider yourself?

How oftern do you get 'near misses' / lose control?

How much experiance do you have of driving / performance cars?

hehe

I personally consider myself to be a good driver, my weakness (i've been told this by an advanced driving instructor too!) is occasionally I get 'red mist' and lose composure.

I very rarely have near misses, and very rarely lose control.

I have 4 years driving experience, 1 of which in the gti, plus a track / tuition day at Lotus.

Fairly good I would say - I know my limits and I know my car's limits. I don't feel the need to drive everywhere at 100mph and never speed in 30mph zones. I'm a responsible driver I would say.

I've been driving 10 years (Yes, I'm old) and have 6 years NCB. I passed my test at 17 and got my first car at 19.

I've (touch wood) never been pulled over and I've (touch wood) never been done for speeding or any other motoring offences.

I've had a couple of near misses but through no fault of my own. I have 2 fault claims against me in my 10 years of driving - the first was the demise of my first car, as a result of a tyre blowout - so not actually my fault. The second was a silly mistake that even the best drivers out there will admit to having made, or nearly having made - went into the back of someone on a roundabout because I was concentrating on the roundabout, not the car infront.

I don't get road rage really - I get annoyed with people who drive like c*cks but I think everyone does.

The fact it cost nothing to add me to the insurance on my Dad's 5.7litre left hand drive corvette suggests that insurance companies like me too.

Such great roads round me I tend to push the limits a bit when on my own. Never been stopped for speeding and a only ever had 3 points for an overtaking manoeuvre the unmarked car behind didn't like many years ago. Averaged over 20k miles every year for the last 12 years hardly any near misses but a few single car write offs when i moved to rwd cars with no electronic safty controls that don't forgive as much as most other people's daily transport (one was a blown tyre and one a broken rear suspension so not completely my fault but i wasn't doing 55mph at the time lol).

did slide an Alfa 156 estate (a garage courtesy car) into a stone dyke skidding on some gravel several years back too lol and i've clipped a tree with the rear end in a slide that went a bit too far in a mk2 escort rally car though that wasn't on the road :D

in the words of rainman "i'm an excellent driver" though ;-) been on quite a few driver training courses (not the forced ones you get if you are caught speeding) advanced road craft, police observation training etc.

I am a man and therefore, a perfect driver.

If I'm being honest, I am a little overcautious in a car that doesn't give me the confidence to 'press on' even though the car would probably hold on anyway. I'm like this in the Ibiza, whereas in the MINI before it, I could pretend I was a Rally God.

I do speed at up to 40mph in a 30mph area most of the time, but thats's generally to do with preserving traffic flow more than anything else. If my car was to get out of control, I'd probably stack it.

Well when first passed my test I drove lik an absolute w***er. But then again aren't we all like that when we pass?

I've had 1 accident but it was wildlife! A deer ran out in the road and I had no chance.

I've been pulled over once for my driving, an unmarked car didnt like my overtaking maneuvre, he let me off though. I've been pulled over four times just because I look young and drive a 306, talk about discrimination!!

I tend to get a bit annoyd wen burberry-cladded ASBO lovers try and overtake me and race me in their pathetic little saxo's with horrific mods(no offense to Saxo owners).

But I have never had any near misses or lost control, I know my limits.

I havnt dun any track driving yet, that is for the future

well i have only been driving 2years in november, so im still learning. im not quite their with the limits of my car because tbh it scares the $hit out of me. i used to do over a 1000miles a week in my old job (i was a white van man) and that taught me quite alot about m.way driving. so i do consider myself to have a good awarness on the roads.

you'll learn the limits in time, take it slowly and patiently - never get too carried away.

If by that you mean we drove like we knew it all and were invincible, then you're probably right. Doing circuits of Garstangs one way system and getting a Range Rover sideways at 17 was no mean feat back in the day!

well most people probebly do. i did a few stupid things but not many. wen i got my Gti my dad gave me a big lecture about there being a time and a place to put your foot down etc. . . . as he had a near death experiance with his R5 turbo.

15 years one accident, at work i came out of a building looked at my truck nothing behind it or infront, got in done my paperwork then checked mirrors could'nt see anything, a car had parked infront so i had to reverse so mirror check and off we go 20 feet or so a man come's running out waving his arm's shouting stop,

you know the signs on trucks that read if i can't see your mirrors i can't see you......!

it's true,he'd parked so close to me i could'nt see his brand new transit and the door's on the trailer were now on his dashboard.

a write off and i never felt a thing

i was banned for 1 year aged 20

nothing since then clean as a whistle

Hmm this is a difficult one

I think im fairly good really, i hate being a passenger as most peoples driving annoys me, id rather drive anywhere myself. Because then i feel incontrol, im also a nervous passenger and i also get car sick  so when im driving i feel better all round :)

Ive been driving 3 years now, had no crashes, and never been caught for speeding (tough wood!)

My bad habbits are probably being too hard on the brakes and relying on them loads, which probably makes passengers nervous, so ill have to try and use them less  . I also pass parked cars very closly (thats what a stubby is for, right!) so my dad yells at me when he is in the car and i pass close, but ive not hit a mirror, yet :P

I also have a habbit of parking really close to everything, even though its a small car i still park really close, to curbs, cars anything, although i am tryig not to it just happens. I think its just something ive picked up, since we have always had more than 7 cars and we did have 10 cars for quite a while, i had to park them close to fit them all in. One used to go to the side of the garage, and getting the others past there was like half an inch each side of the other car to get bym, it was tight! but i never scraped anything :D

And that goes years back ...

My dad tought me how to drive when i was about 11, down a friends farm lanes and things, so since then ive always had to park the cars on a night, so i think im quite good at parking and have good visual awareness. I seem to be able to just get in a car and drive it, without worrying how big it is to park or whatever.

Also my dad used to be a mechanic, so we would often have cars left over for services etc, so id have to move them around, put them up ramps and things.

I dont really speed, and i know the limits of my car, they are very predicatable little things anyway.

Ive driven lots of different cars, shapes, engines and sizes  so i think that gives me good experience too.

Now that sounds like im bragging doesnt it  , im probably not as good as i think i am though, but then again, is anyone!

Been driving for last 3 years and learnt a big big lesson 3 months after passing, i like to think now im quite good driver :)

i accelerate upto the speed limit straight away but never go past it and anyone who knows me or seen me drive will know im at home going through country lanes or cornering etc, i actually annoy one of my mates as he tends to slightly speed everywhere and slow for corners (uses brakes too much) and im the opposite i cruise at 30 see a corner or roundabout and cog it down and boot it round which always livens him up  and i rarely use the brakes unless really needed

im a confident driver and always put trust in my cars which is why im always so fussy on it all being straight and in good condition etc, as i showed my father last weekend hen he was driving the arosa and braking and slowing down for corners and i was saying "back on the acclerator " "off the bloody brakes" i know what the car will do (a big rule in driving iMO) and trust it

i was told by my driving instructor and my mates dad who is also now a qualified driving instructor that im a very good driver with great controll and confidence but tend to be quite aggresive with the car when pressing on like comparing clarkson against a racing driver both quick but like clarkson i tend to piss about too much

apparently my biggest downfall is road rage and to be honest i will agrree as it does really really rile me up when someone shows such a lack of car for other road users etc and i do give alot of road rage in cases like this but would never get violent

overall i think im pretty good, im controlled in what speeds i do, in control most of the time and generally confident, i do have my downfalls as stated above and like many of us will admit but compared to other 'road users' i arent that bad although i would like some proper track tuition in future as you can never learn too much
