Take the drivers side wheel and inner arch off to remove the polystyrene block in the arch and to be able to feed any ducting properly from the engine to the front of the bumper.

There is one bolt securing the original ducting and a couple of screws near the airbox input to remove the lot. Once out you will see a path.

Cheers for the pics! Now I know what I want to do.. I'll just run ducting from the air box to behind the front grille, with a 'performance' filter. The original air feed sounds trickier to remove than it looks then!

Always thought it would be cool to (on a non-GTI) relocate the indicators to fog position then use 1 or both of the holes to run ducting directly into a BMC. shades.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shades:" border="0" alt="shades.gif" />

thanks for the tip.

i have some proper bo air ducting i can make use of now then. i will run feed from that opening you have highlighted in bumper. personally i dont think drilled holes in airbox is a good idea though. i have a nicely sealed box with performance panel filter.

you should make best use of that nice new feed you have. i will see if there is room for heat shielding for the ducting to as the engine bay does get hot air a plenty.

had a play today. i now can see for the 1st time the restriction in the stock induction pipe, it looks really good until you get to the hidden bit by the arch, it goes down to nearly half the bore size, not good. unfortunately my ducting was 76mm bore which is too wide for a nice fit down to the bumper grill. so £40 later i have ordered some 63mm bore ducting, a alu inlet end from demon tweeks. this should be just right hopefully.

single bolt holding stock inlet pipe is very annoying to get to, its covered by the power steering hose.

btw i will add a tip, before replacing the engine cover unscrew the no longer used resonator pipe from underneath it, saves a decent amount of front end weight. i think its agood idea to retain the engine cover, aswell as looking neater and better it retians the engine heat where it should be, in the engine and not the engine bay.

I hope there's no flooding near you Mike!? Another reason to have the intake in the upper grille, apart from cooler air.

mines all done now, didnt need to remove carbon canistor. have a nice spun aluminium air intake duct annodised in black behind the bumper grill, very stealth. and then black flexi 63mm bore ducting upto the primaray stock section of intake pipe. another tip is to remove the inner metal sleeve from the stock pipe to free up some internal bore, its not needed.

will post pics when i get my camera shortly.

there is no access to the upper grill on a gti, the radiator and fan block it off. unless you mean a modification of some sort to the fan housing?

Oh yeah, so there isn't. I never really looked before and just took it for granted. You could modify it but probs not worth it. The air at grille height is just a little bit better than at road level.

Looks like my plan of moving the indicators to the fogs and using the holes as air intakes could become a reality!

Single and old.

Anyways, with a K&N panel filter, or an induction kit, it seems fairly pointless drilling the airbox to me...

old surely not.... dont look a day over 19 i swear

we all still love you lol

would this help the 1.0l sound a little better? i heard once, i dont know where that the 1.0l engine can suffer from having too much air going into it? so if i drill the holes under the filter will i lose some of the little power i have at the moment?

thanks

ben

anyone know? i want to do it tonight!

A decent air feed/upgrade will help any car.....in terms of sounding better I could not say with the 1.0 as not owned one

If you where to drill holes in your air box this would help with the noise matey but like mentiond above will suck in hot air debatble where the small amount would effect performance but if its just a wee bit of noise your after drilling a few wholes is the way to go

Ive only got one concern about drilling holes in the airbox, as ive thought about it myself but, assuming you've got a high pressure air feed coming straight from the front of the car (by the sounds of it a lot of you do) drilling holes in the airbox will completely waste the "HIGH PRESSURE" air feed.

In other words youve given a place for all that air beeing forced in to escape, before the filter. Like drilling a hole in the boost pipe on a turbo car....not good! Not only that you'd be allowing the warm ambient air temperature of the engine bay into the airbox. Sounds like a complete contradiction to improving power to me!

I dont think LGG was after power i think he was more interested in the extra noise from this mod.
