Just skimmed through this post from start to finish (took me about 20 minutes though, lol) and that's one hell of a undertaking. Just wanted to say "fair play" to you and it looks great - hope to hear it one day.

sound card on my pc is knackered - i'll upload vid later - but the piccies look so oem. definately worth the stress, financial implications and general head aches darren. mucho respect for undertaking it and staying with it - this little motor continues to go from strength to strength - nice one mate. shades.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shades:" border="0" alt="shades.gif" />

Firsty thankyou so much for all the nice comments, its nice to see other peoples appreciation for my hobby.

Regarding the cost, it is the worst part of the job paying the bill but I am obsessed with cars and since selling my race spec mini a little over 4 years ago I knew I wanted to have n/a on throttle bodies again sometime.

I have owned the car from new and could not have brought myself to do this to the car at first but it seems middle aged now and I was not so worried about having it taken apart. Also the fact I had a 'runaround' car as well made it easier as less pressure to get Lupo back on the road.

The two guys who did the conversion deserve a mention I think:

Mike at MBE in Lincoln for doing such a good job in recommending what parts to buy, fitting them all and mapping it to run so well.

Mark at Electromec Lincoln for being brave enough to open up my wiring loom, and then install the new ECU and then refit everything to OEM standards.

The noise is as Andi says, very nice. Garling and lumpy at idle, building slowly though a low gargle below 3000rpm to a full on bark aboue 5000rpm. The final revs over 7000rpm are orgasmic but thats another story...hehehe.

Also as Andi says it does feel slower than std sometimes as it is so smooth. No kicks mid power just hard pull from any revs in any gear. You need to watch the speedo to appreciate how fast you are accelerating.

I think 0-60mph is a bout 6.5seconds and 0-100mph is about 14seconds but the best part is mid range shove to overtake.

I am very skint now so no modifications for a while. Tidied all engine bay now and modifying engine cover (subtley) to allow it to be refitted just leaving the air filter on show. As soon as I can afford it I am going full race head and cams to push 190bhp but that is not for a long while yet.

ps: I have got rid of those Lexus tailights at last and got some smoked Cambridge ones on.

Brake servo take-off is just a pipe from one inlet barrel on the inlet manifold to the original vacuum reservoir through the original one way valve.

Inlet manifold is 4 barrels spigot fitted into the two flanges. There are three smaller barrels each with a high tensile capscrew inside pulling the flanges together. This way the design is tidy, suffers no weld distortion and also no welds present to suffer from vibration fatigue cracking over time.

Filter is an ITG filter and cost £89 with stainless stell backplate to fasten it to the throttle bodies. Available from many accessory places.

thanks, any future engine plans?

I think I will uprate the clutch when it needs changing.

Then when I can afford it I fancy cams and full race speification head together with a manifold and removal of the pre-cat.

Hi, i'll introduce myself as this is my first real post. Ive got a New Polo 9n3 (It was a Ultimate Dubs) and have big plans for it. At the moment its got a 64 BHP 1.2Ltr engine, and ordered it because had plans to change the engine over in the following year. Was thinking of putting a S3 engine in, put now ive seen, and listened to the sound, maybe If I brought the older polo GTI engine and do what you have done by putting TB'S on might be cheaper (Can it be done) Realy admire you chaps, very brave indeed!!! But it all pays of in the end. Or have the S3 engine in, but put that on TB'S???

I don't know alot on TB'S, more than that, my car is all electric, Drive-by-wire, E.T.C, after what you chaps have gone through with changing it all over has sort of made me aware its not a walk in the park!!

All the best, Joe

Absolutally it can yeah. Same as my set up really. The basic process of fitting throttle bodies is similar on all cars, fit the throttle bodies and manifold, alter the neccessary pipework, wiring, sensors, fit a new ECU and map the engine.

more than that, my car is all electric, Drive-by-wire

So was mine but it ain't anymore. The old throttle body is removed anyway so with it goes the DBW module. A throttle cable is then attached to the throttle pedal and connect to the the new throttle bodies linkage and problem sorted...except the EPC light stays on until you remove the bulb!

Correct it is not easy but if you get the right guys on the job there is no reason the conversion will not go very well. I can honestly say my car is nicer to drive (I mean as in a better map) than when it was standard. No flat spots, smooth power and torque delivery and the power does not die off at the top end of the rev range.

Best of luck if you attempt this, feel free to ask questions.

you cant just remove the bulb, as its solderd to the board, you would be better off sticking some bluetack over it wink.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> like i did

I heard this too actually, they are LED's all soldered tight on the board (wonder what you do if one blows...new clock set board)? Anyway, how easy was it to do, can I just remove the clock cover to lift the clocks, then unscrew the board from the back of them? Please dont say its a dash out job.

doing isnt that hard .. the problem is getting the clocks to work again :S hehhee i bet thats put you off, but seriously the only problem ive had is the calibration of the rev counter, it once somehow slipped on the needle, so i had to take the clocks apart again and move the needle back to just under 1000 rpm and its been fine ever since.

getting the rev counter and speedo needles off is a bit nerve wrecking as they are on REALY tight, and it feels like the gonna break when you pull em off, thats the hardest part, second hardest is getting the stupid cowel off from over the clocks omg what a mission

can take some pics to help ya if you like ?>

Just an update to show that throttle bodies need not be fuel heavy.

Eatser weekend I went to my gf's parents house. The journey was 103 miles each way and I averaged 48mpg on the trip there. That is better than the car has ever done since I have owned it!

Thats not bad performance figures you would prob keep up with a type R , And you wouldn't be far off a Lotus elise 111s to 100mph .

very tidy engine bay though .

Without sounding like I go around racing everything which I dont I will give a quick (and very, very rough) indication of how quick the car probably is in comparison to other hatches. Again this is very crude and basic.

Based on power to weight ratio:

Lupo Gti (mine): 176bhp/ton

Escort Cosworth: 176bhp/ton

Focus RS: 169bhp/ton

Megane 225: 167bhp/ton

Audi S3: 166bhp/ton

Civic type R: 166bhp/ton

Golf R32: 163bhp/ton

Saxo Vts: 130bhp/ton

Golf 1.8T: 123bhp/ton

Mini Cooper: 109bhp/ton

very tidy engine bay though .

Thankyou. Sice having the work done I have become a cleaning geek more than ever and spend time polishing the engine now as well as the paint. rolleyes.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I would say you'll easy out run a type-r to be honest. Petrified's sport that is stripped managed to do it easily on the santapod strip.

Just been flicking through these topics on ITBs, looking good!! Was looking at the chart showing the power gains, do you have one of the torque by any chance? Heard rumours of torque dropping off with the addition of throttle bodies. . . . could be wrong though.

At the moment im considering a 1.4 valver engine on ITBs for my mk3 polo but i'll be a long summer and by the way it seems here a winter project too! lol

Keep up the good work!

Ken
