  1. i would, think of how many miles you could cover on the labour costs!
  2. people get issues with 1.7SDI gearboxes and pedal boxes, but that doesnt rule out the TDI, ive seen some on here with bad gear boxes and broken pedal boxes. the 1.7 box is pretty specific, but if you have some spare cash and one pops up why not? my 1.7SDI hadent ever had a pedal box or gear box through my ownership (passed it on at 87k) LOTS of 1.9 tdi/sdi/D parts fit on the sdi plus i like the noise.
  3. above. ive gone from an SDI to (albeit) an older Turbo diesel and with aspect of boost i do find myself driving much faster. my lupo would regularly return 65mpg on a trip i do everyday probably very similar to yours. and would never really dip even if i drove it like i stole it. again ive never driven a lupo TDI but i have a college friend with a polo 1.4TDI, he has a heavy foot and gets about 45 mpg on the same route. not sure about the TDI but the SDI does sit lovely at 56mph, which if you can take, cruising at that speed wil save you so so so much fuel my Turbo D MK2 sits at much higher revs and with a Little throttle boosts its way up past 75 without you realizing. the lupo would just sit and do 56 all day long, i feel in the golf im accelerating and slowing down all the time, which i didnt in the lupo
  4. pump or belt tentioner? check fluid? if the frequency of the click on full lock its higher defiantly PAS related. but could be tensioner
  5. shoulda come to me, woulda done it for parts and beer in 30 mins! its 4 bolts
  6. seat ibiza is an option too.some people apparently use MK4 golf sdi ones. not sure on the clutch thing mind.
  7. pretty sure its hydraulic PAS. anyway, the pump runs of the same belt as the alternator so if the pumps go some resistance its gunna slow down the alternator and put pressure on the driving pulley (crank pulley) potentially causing engine revs to drop.
  8. if there's no fault codes then look at fluid etc. there's loads of clutch bands in an Auto, so if they wear out it will slip. also the fluid determines when and how it changes gear with pressures etc so if its old and dirty it wont shift as smooth. the fluid should be red by the way and some cars levels need to be checked while the engines running in park. also sometimes there's no drain plug for the ATF so you just drop the pan in the right way to drain the fluid.
  9. i wouldn't mind buying another SDI. i would do things a little different to last time though have fun with the gearbox!
  10. atleast with the engine out you can tidy up the engine bay much easier!
