All this **** about 'smoothing' airboxes is stupid. The inlet needs a little bit of turbulance... Do people honestly think VW wouldn't make the airboxes smooth if it was better for the car? It'd certainly cost them a heck of a lot less!

Of course they add restrictions mate, to keep power and emissions to a level for tax and insurance ratings.

You would be amazed at the restrictions intentionally added to production vehicles that I have been shown and told about when I worked I worked at VW HQ............chipping is a classic one........The S3 Mk1 was detuned to make the UK TT more desirable and a little quicker until it tailed off in sales and then the S3 was realeased with 225bhp to match the TT out the factory etc etc.

I could go on and have to disagree with you on this one.

  • 2 weeks later...

Followed Mike's picture guide - did 8 holes on the smooth air box wall with a 10mm drill bit. I'd recommend it if you're bored some day.. Only gets loud when you floor it or hit about 3000rpm

I did this mod to a friend's TT240 (qs) and in conjunction with a K&N panel filter it lost 3bhp running on the same dyno before and after.

I'm simply going off past research that I've done. I may be wrong because what's said by VW HQ is obviously more accurate than first hand experience.

I know full well that car manufacturers add restrictions, but the VW Airboxes are just as restricted with or without the fins and like I said before, the air turbulence the fins in the airbox create helps as much as it hinders!

This is a pic of a sport airbox so it slightly differs to a GTI inside but you will get the idea.

The red area (not the central red circle) is where the holes need to be made if you want it like mine (10mm drill bit) and the green lines are the raised ridges that I broke off with plyers and sanded smooth .

What is the function of the pipe inside the airbox? Restriction? direction?
