DarkStryder360
My car does it alot...2000reg, 70k milege.AND it is 95% of the time when downshifting into 2ND Gear, or when I put it into Neutral for a little while, it will cut out. It scares me, coming upto a round about, all I am looking at is my Speedo, waiting for the "Battery" to pop up and then everything to go.Had MOT and passed but still its ****ed.I was told by some source to change Spark Plugs, although haven't got round to that yet... Niche
An MOT test doesn't make your car road worthy. Cutting out can be a number of things, spark plugs, ignition leads, coil pack, dirty throttle body, lambda sensor.

Gibbeth!
I was watching a program on discovery the other day, Bug Crisis I think, and it said a car didnt have to run to pass an MOT. Id have thought it had to to check emmisions. Maybe it was because of the age of the car.Anyway, it sounds like the throttle body, really common, just take the airbox off and give it a clean. Alex_225
Mine came back from its service and wasn't idling properly, cut out on me twice. Turned out to be the fuel filter. Basically the one from a particular manufacturer wasn't the correct dimensions, therefore wasn't making a proper seal and in the process cause a loss of fuel pressure. Maybe something to check anyway.
DarkStryder360
Serviced last.. umm.. lol. Bought it second hand so I dont know, I do have the details for it, so it would have been at least 1yr, 1yr and half.Getting serviced at a VW Dealership down here in the south west (Plymouth) isnt a great idea because they have a reputation of taking you for a ride. SO many times parents have bought a VW, good quality, but the dealer is a pain, they dont want to trreat problems, just there for the money, customer service .. pfft lol.Throttle Body sounds familiar from other posts and threads read about the problem. It needs a good clean anyways, the whole thing.Mine came back from its service and wasn't idling properly, cut out on me twice. Turned out to be the fuel filter. Basically the one from a particular manufacturer wasn't the correct dimensions, therefore wasn't making a proper seal and in the process cause a loss of fuel pressure. Maybe something to check anyway. So get a new Filter or just tweak it... with a hammer I hope? lol. I will check into it as I am fed up of looking at the dials rather than the road going round corners...Thanks chaps...
jon_273
1)TBH people should expect problems when they don't get their car serviced. Personally, when I buy a car I service it more or less straight away, especially if the service history was unknown. Besides, the Lupo needs a service every year so it sounds like yours is overdue.2) If the VW main dealer is crap, go somewhere else, rather than not going at all! Ask friends for recommendations, or even better check on http://www.goodgaragescheme.co.uk/ for a list of reputable garages in your area.3) Niche has given you a nice list of things to check out, many other lupos have had this problem so I'm sure the solution is on the forum somewhere. cardaft
You have been given some very good advice there, especially from jon. Get it serviced, oil and filter change, air filter change, fuel filter change and new spark plugs. Also get the throttle body cleaned. Do that before you do anything else. A car NEEDS servicing every 10K or every year you know
blackcat
Well my input might have no results but at least I let you know..I own 2 renault 5 gt turbos and I had the same problem on corners and steep roads with my engine cutting out!Turns out that my petrol feeder inside my petrol tank had come off (easily considering speed humps) meaning that it could not feed petrol into the pipe that ran to the engine. So I got it attached properly and the problem was sorted!Thought I should post as it sounds very familiar!J

LoopyLing
Both my Lupo's suffered the same thing - the fix for BOTH of them was replacing the gasket under the throttle bottle, it's a rubber ring about 4" diameter (maybe a bit bigger), costs £8 odd for the part. Instant cure on both.
iShine
On way my to Uni last month, my car starts juddering felt like it wanted to blow up and wouldn't accelerate over 30. I managed to get to the car park and had a look at my engine. It was fitting - So i knew something was seriously up with it. Phoned AA and the man came to look at it, I had a misfire and needed a new coil and a set of plugs.Never once cut out though - So i doubt if it's the coil. Mr Ben
My Arosa was cutting out when pulling off slowly - scared the crap out of me at junctions. All that was need was the throttle body cleaning. Cost me £25 at a local VAG specialist (inc a diagnostic). I'd start there and get that cleaned. The guy at the workshop said that in 10 years he has only had to change one throttle body - the rest of the time it just needs cleaning.
