mattarosa
Is it clicking and clunking or has the strap itself broken?
fandango
Clicking and a clunk, tried greasing it, drilled the rivets out the speaker to get access, not made much difference. Also engine management light has come on....booked in the garage to investigate. only had it three days , loadsa of history and cambelt changed 4 years ago, water pump not done though...apart from that its great... stator
Is it the mounting bracket on the door that is catching on the door frame? I've not seen a decent solution to this, I have the problem myself

stator
My problem isn't the check strap, it's the mount point Was just pointing out it's not always the same problem

fandango
Just an update...I followed the link above and ordred two of the oilite bushes. Where the arm links to the door I assumed it was for there.....wrong they were way too big. I had already drilled that bit out but luckily I had some strong white plastic tubing, pushed that thro the hole and put the pin back in. No difference...... I took it out again ,the complete unit, and the bush I took out which was loose (opp side to the spring ) I put one of the oilite bushes in but still the same...... So on one side only of each of the oilite bushes (I got four as they were pence) I rubbed them up and down a file, took half an hour before they had ground down enough to fit side by side, I put the pin back in and two c clips (it had one but put another just in case). Voila....no noise, clunking , smooth action..... To summise the bushes ordered thto the link , if they were the same only 13/14 mm long, ie in one piece it would take 30 mins max to fix. Not sure how long it will take before it wears down again but so far cost me about £4 and have got enough for the other door...... Happy Days....... pkrboo
i just fixed my drivers door, it was a combination of the roller the same as =fandango and the bush that the pin goes through. The roller was completely missing but i found it in the bottom of the door, cleaned it up and put it back in with a nut and bolt, then i fitted a new oilite bushing for the pin side, pushed in with a G clamp and it is ok again, still a bit rough due to the rusty roller but i will leave it as is for now. if it gets bad i will swap it with the passenger side as i think they are not handed

weslangdon
What's the fix when the check strap has torn itself from its door mounting bolts, it looks like a door off job 2 me, any one recommend a fix?
Skezza
g clamp is the way forwardAlthough this worked for Matt, I found this way difficult. For me, a good set of heavy duty pliers were excellent. When I say good, not those cheap shitty pliers from Home Bargains, a decent set.Something like this would do it:
