Piers
A mate of mine at work has a 1.3 mk1 he's doing a full rebuild on. Completely stripped. Dipped. Etc Etc. he's already about 20k into it. That's not including buying it! And my best mate has loads of ford sheds. Sierra cosworth. RS turbo. He's just sold a fiesta Zetec S and scrapped a v6 mondeo after pinching parts off it. I persuaded him German cars are the best so he uses a mk4 gti as his daily

Skezza
I just missed out on a 112k black Lupo 1.0 for £300 it was absolutely immaculate; the only problem was gearbox had gone. I wanted it just for all the panels hahaThey are getting very cheapI'd have had that and fixed it, although with a knackered gearbox it would have been difficult to shift I assume? Or did it work in 1 gear only or 1-4? Someone on here took a 1.4 gearbox and fitted it in a 1.0 and said that it felt a lot more beefy at the higher end. I'd have probably done the same.I wouldn't say good ones go cheap. Barried up Lupos go for next to nothing (I'm glad to be honest, because Barried up Lupos 9/10 look ****) and spares & repair don't fetch much either. Which is why I'm so damn reluctant to let the green machine go in its current state. Yeah, it's got some front end damage, but the engine is perfect, with only 98k on. Someone would get it for a few hundred quid, fix up the panel work and have a perfect car. So I don't know the plan for it is yet.
jpsh120
bet you could pick up a half decent ford escort for next to nothing in the early 1990's - wonder what you'd get for one these days? My point is every car hits an absolute rock bottom before they become something worth having (obviously some more that others) before the numbers gradually become scarcer - and selling prices tend to go up for good examples or they just disappear to the scarp-yard in the skywhen you take into account running costs - cars are an expensive luxury, expensive but affordable/necessity or a must have for work purposes, its nice that folk can pick up a half decent run around for buttons :-)I saw a Mk1 escort at the NEC classic car show and it was insured for £85k!! Consider this was a cheap as chips, common as muck motor back in the day!!I thought the £950 I paid for the Arosa was pretty good, it has done 72k and came with a new MOT, FSH, loads of receipts etc.

Piers
Is any mk1 escort even worth £85k?are you joking? They are worth massive money... depending on the condition i can easily see one being valued at this. it could be a nut and bolt rebuild with every inch polished to perfection... or it could be an ex rally championship winning car.Not called Alex is he? I have someone on Facebook who fits that bill.no mate..
jpsh120
The £85k escort was a very rare twin cam and very tasty but whether it is WORTH that sort of money is very debatable. With classics it is all about whether a car has a cult following, even some of the rarest cars aren't worth much as they are unloved. sam_vr6
are you joking? No, not joking. I'm not much of a Ford person at all, got a soft spot for rs turbos, cosworths etc so know a bit about them. That is some amount of money, then again it is an iconic/classic car and pretty damn old now. I woulda thought they were worth £30/40k tops.

Old school fords ftw!Aye but as much as they're cool, likes of rs2000 and rs turbo are very unreliable....My dad used to have an rs2000 and a fiesta xr2 but my favourite of his old cars is definately his mk2 GTi 16v which he owned for 13 years (I was aged 3 to 16, so grew up in it). Very sad day when it was sold with 176,000 miles on the clock in excellent condition. Old fords are nice, but vws defo better, ooooft mk2 jettas, mk1 and 2 golfs, corrados etc

Piers
classic cars arent reliable lol. You dont buy them for fuel economy and cheap parts... you buy them because you want one. Thats why i got my mk1... not because i want a reliable car.I can easily see a mk1 being over 50k to buy, depending on the car and its history. In 2010 i went to the nurburgring and met a chap whos well known in the ford world. at the time he had an immaculate mk1 mexico with a cosworth engine... running over 500hp. Took me down the road in it and it was bonkers. im lucky enough to have experienced a few cars over the 500bhp figure but this thing was mental!he sold it for 30k. that was in 2010... i know its only a few years but you would be amazed how much value increases....He now owns some crazy mk2 creation. Its an ex thundersaloon... for anyone that does know what this means... over 600bhp, sequential gearbox. Race car.

booble
Is the Lupo a car that has or may get a cult following ? - I've always considered them quirky and fairly desirable in relation to (in my opinion) ordinary small cars - they certainly have a character about them which isn't present in all cars. I had this opinion before owning one.
Pottster
Before I got mine I was aware of them as a quirky small VW,but I would never have dreamt I would get one. I was initially after a Corrado as a 3rd car, but the wife got a TT so it wasn't really necessary to get one and I was then after a MKII Golf, but realised that I could get better value and more fun form a Lupo Gti and less issues with maintaining one. I don't think they are cult classics in the huge way, but the GTi certainly has the potential Edited February 3, 2013 by Pottster

covlupo
I think i might have over paid on mine.65k, 1.4 16v. poverty spec. 2k.trouble is i think the bottom end is going, everyone says "its quite for a diesel".....its not a diesel its a petrol. And i think the steering rack is going. So good choice, dont you agree? Rich
You have overpaid, I paid less than that for a 1.4 S spec with 38k on the clocks eight years ago.In other news, the interior of the SDI was disgusting, I've had to strip the seats/carpets/headliner/plastics out today.I'm not sure if I'm going to salvage the interior, I've got a few options lying around in the crap collection. booble
I paid 900 quid for my 1.4s lupo with 67k miles a year ago. But it was in a bad way tbh. Ive had a lot of repairs:Refurbished gearboxNew clutchCam belt kitNew steering rack (70 quid off eBay)Door strapsReplaced tinted rear lights with standardParcel shelfDrinks holdersAirbag giroNew catMust have spent about 1300 quid on it, it's a great little car now, but looking back £900 was too much. Rich
I should chuck a few quid at this one, but with 200k on it I'm not overly inspired.
