olliejones
Hi Guys,I was driving my lupo the other day when it died - as if Id stalled it. When I turn the key it sounds like somethings spinning? It doesnt turn over?Any suggestions - I'm guessing its not good Ollie Edited September 12, 2011 by olliejones
Pete
Starter motor I'd say, if you can hear something spinning but the engine isn't turning over.
olliejones
Hey loopete,That sounds promising, but would that be the reason why it cutted out - because the starter motors gone?
Rich
my half arsed assumption is, check the timing belt.
Pete
No, was just thinking that. Could be flywheel related, as the starter meshes with the flywheel to help kick start your engine. But your flywheel also bolts to your clutch which obviously gives you your drive. How did it stall? Did it just die while stationary or were you taking up drive when it died? olliejones
I was driving steady at about 50mph. It was sounding alittle 'rattlely' before it happened - Just hope its not anything massive like cambelt or gearbox.
Pete
my half arsed assumption is, check the timing belt.It should still crank over though if it's jumped a tooth, but yeah, stalling your car can sometimes cause it to lose timing. Pete
So you were driving steadily at 50, the engine cut out at that speed, did you pull to a stop and try to start it again or try it while it was still on the move?
Rich
I'm not saying it's lost timing, I'm saying pop the cover off and check the belts are still intact.
olliejones
Yep. I was driving back from work in a 50, doing 50mph and it just died, dash lights came on and all power steering etc cut out (just as if Id stalled). I coasted into a side road and tried to get it going again but it just sounds like somethings spinning.
Defcon5
If you try and start it in 1st does it jump?
Pete
Alright Rich calm down buddy! I'm just saying that even without the belt it should still crank, although if it does crank with no belt then you're in trouble!
olliejones
If you try and start it in 1st does it jump? Hello mate, just went out and checked and yes it does.
Pete
So it does crank then?
olliejones
So it does crank then? Well, I must be honest I didnt try starting it in 1st gear without the clutch down - that does seem to jump. But if you try start it normally in neutral it doesnt crank.
