355 miles in a year...

Well, I had never planned to sell her, but this year's MOT brings home the fact that I only did 355 miles in the last twelve months.

My workload over the last year has just been horrendous and the Lupo was my escape from it all; but it's obvious I'm just not getting the time in for the run outs. I had my line manager breaking my balls for two hours on Monday, so the workload isn't going to go away any time soon...

What would you guys do? I'm basically paying £1 per mile just for insurance. Which is ridiculous... She required about £500 of maintenance last year, and this year the second (year 8) cambelt is due. That will bring cost per mile to around £3, ignoring deprecation (appreciation!) and notional amounts of fuel...

Just don't want to sell, though. But this situation makes absolutely no financial sense...

My dad has a D reg Fiat X1/9 which has averaged about 300 miles a year for the last 10 years, just doesn't really make sense, but he won't part with it. I think it's just turned over 32000 miles. Full service history, every receipt. I keep telling him he needs to make sure he sells it to the right buyer otherwise it'l be dead in a year.

That's the problem with weekend toy cars.

My mileage has dropped enormously since buying the Dune as I used to take the GTI on longer trips, but now it is really only becoming my weekend toy and occasional daily as the Dune is much better than the Arosa.

My GTI should be sparkling! So I'll have to give it some serious love and attention. Dodo Juice here I come...

I've done much less mileage than expected! 21,000 in two years, yet I'm insured for 20,000 per year and in theory work alone should be 15,000 a year?

Perhaps I should stop borrowing cars from work lol.

On the other hand, my daily has done almost 50k in 2.5 years...

And, no, I *really* don't want to sell it. But it's 5k or so tied up not being offset against the mortgage (when you get old, you worry about these things...)

Heart says no way. But head is starting to get too loud...

I'd *love* an X1/9. Have wanted one since I was about eight and saw a split bumper version on holiday in the Isle of Man. I recall being in the Fiat dealer when my mum was collecting her Fiat Uno in 1989 and watching a young couple trying out one of the very last Grand Finales...

I also know of two film appearances for the X1/9 - DARYL, where one being towed backwards on a tow-truck (irony!) was used as a ramp, and Disaster on the Coastliner (that took some googling!) where one is on display in a train station foyer only to be hit by a train running off the end of the tracks...

hmm... How much would you be looking to sell it for if you were to put it up for sale?

Not sure, it's only done a bit over 35k.

It's in excellent condition.

Black, on an 02 plate.

If you can afford to keep it, then i would definitely advise you to!

It doesnt sound like its costing you the earth and if you keep it in good nic, then its only holding value. Lupo gti's with low miles are only going to get harder and harder to come buy.

End of the day you only live once so you may enjoy it and have things you enjoy! got with your heart ;)

I see where you're coming from but I'm in a (kinda) similar position.

My GTi has 25k on the clock and I've averaged about 3,500k per yaer over the last 3 years. However values are holding up really well from what I've seen and I agree with the other guy on here that mentioned that low mileage examples are difficult to come by, after all yours is averaging just over 4k a year....you'd have people queueing up for that if you decided to sell.

Can you not insure it for 5k miles a year (social use) to bring your premium down?

With interest rates the way they are the cash is of little use. How much are you really gonna save from your mortgage repayment with £6k of cash using the offset? Not that much I would guess. Also you'll never replace the car with another like it I bet.

Up to you.....

p.s. what's costing you £500 a year in maintenance if you're not doing any mileage??

Service, tyres, brakes, etc...?

Never seen that before...ta

For a car that's done 300 miles in the last year, had £500 spent on it, and 35k on the clock the potential outlay for "consumables" the following year must be pretty low, cambelt or otherwise. I was quoted £250 for a cambelt change by a specialist, oil service at about £130?

I would personally hang on to a low mileage GTi unless I financially could not afford to keep but each to his own

At today's interest rates five grand isn't going to save you much on your mortgage - unless you need the money for something I wouldn't sell - you'd only regret it.

I sold my 2005 GTi (on a 54 plate as they say on UCR) last year only because selfish bar stewards were parking inconsiderately in front of my lockup - I wanted to keep it garaged as it was pretty much pristine (had it since it was three months old, FVWSH and receipts for every penny spent on it) - only 20.5k on the clock when I sold it.

Six months down the line I decided to get another car - even thought about another GTi but knew I'd never get one as good as I'd sold without paying through the nostrils - ended up buying an old ('04) Fabia vRS to poodle about in (not bothered about parking it in the street and I have to say, considering it cost a good whack less than I sold the Lupo for, I'm quite happy with it).

Last year it had new rear dampers both sides; all new bushes up front plus new wishbones and ball joints, new rear discs, and a new nearside inner CV joint. Quite a lot seemed to go wrong all at once...

I guess the cambelt will be the acid test. If I bring myself to get it done, then I'll be keeping it...

I'll try to squeeze in a drive this weekend. But this "weekend" is yet another that I have to get certain things done for work. They really are taking the piss, but they know there's nothing else going and I have an "hours as necessary" contract (no overtime)...

I *do* love winding it up, though. The weighting of the steering, with all the feel through it and the brakes. It's so much more of a driver's car than the VRS. And it's got to the stage where people are starting to notice it on the road - there's so few Lupos in good nick left, let alone GTIs...

But I am itching for something rear wheel drive...

i sold mine about a month ago and want another one already, i loved my gti when i had it but you dont realise how good they are until you sell and get somethign else. i need to get a few things sorted first but i will definatly be buying another one, even if i only drove it 100miles a year they are stil worth it. amazing cars.
