Right, can anybody tell me the difference in a stainless exhaust i'd buy from a shop to a custom stainless?

other than ones been made by a branded company and one isnt, are there any differences in performance?

thanks, ben

There's not many bore sizes to choose from and if they are a good company, they'll already know what to use. If you tell them that you want a different size bore as you have heard that it's better, then i'm sure they'll be able to do that.

T304 comes to mind for Stainless Steel. Does that sound right?

Disagree totally, have you seen the difference in standard bore between a 1.4s sport and am R34 skyline? There is a massive variation in bore size available in stainless tubing and it's effect on the engine is massive. Even a few mm too large on an NA will kill torque.

T304 is what most decent places will use unless you want titanium or inconel (although why you would on a lupo would be beyond me!).

Pinch bends will effect performance, mandrels are much better.

There's 2", 2.25", 2.5", 2.75", 3", 3.25 and 3.5". That's only 7 and for small engined car you'll not be going bigger than 2.25". So that makes 2. Plus i'm sure that you could get one bigger but then you're talking stupid HP'd cars.

I know you can get smaller (Ford's stupid KA) but if you're going aftermarket I doubt they'll fit anything small than a 2".

You can get smaller than 2", and you can get smaller increments in bore than .25" why do you think you can't? It's just tubing...

not quite sure of the bore, i got quoted £250 for a cat back stainless system, its from 1 stop performance, which fit exhausts from custom chrome in nuneaton? not sure if this helps

These fast fit type exhaust places always make me chuckle.

There is no comparison between a system that you buy "off the shelf" thats had hours and hours of development and testing to the lets make it bend there and have a silencer here type crap.

In a magazine a few years ago they took a car to one of these "specialist" centres, the car was put on a rolling road before with the standard OEM system then again with the new "high performance bespoke system". They had done a great job and lost 45bhp from a 150bhp ford.

Buy it from a reputable manufacturer and you will be fine.

---- before anyone comments, by fast fit type centres I dont mean the specialist exhaust guys like BTR, Tony Law etc, these are truely clever chaps that can work magic and know all about resonance levels and back pressure, gas flow etc.----

Very true, there is so much to be calculated with the pulse tuning etc. All the "custom" ones i've seen on a dyno have lost a fair bit of power..

The routing is the same for all center exit systems on the Lupo. the only difference will be the bore which can be adapted easily enough. I'll get the Bastuck system for the Sport up on the site this evening though..

all the Bastuck systems are on the site now including systems for Lupo's without a centre exit:

I think to say that custom exhausts are a chuckle is a tad unfair,

in some cases with modifying, you have no choice but to get a custom one made.

Like for example, I bought a 4-2-1 manifold for the GTi, which came with a de-cat, if i wanted to fit it i had no choice but to fit the de-cat too as the flange was different on the car and would not match up. I have ran the de-cat for a couple of months, but after the emmissions playing havock with the ECU and lambda sensor, i took it in to pipewerx to have a custom one mocked up.

They replaced the flange, integrated my old CAT, flexi pipe, increased to bore size 1/4" and removed the middle box.

IMO it pulls slightly better, makes a nice throaty noise, doesn't drone like other off the shelf exhausts and sits perfectly.

That is where the custom shops come in to play. Iy only cost 160inc vat too!

In terms of custom exhausts, A lot of it depends on where it is being made.

I can't quote the "brand" as such but one of the p******ow exhausts will probably just give you a noise and virtually no power gain and if you are lucky enough to get a power gain, you'll probably see a loss in low down torque.

Better exhaust builders such as Pipewerx near Wigan or AAS in Newcastle will be able to do a few calculations to help choose the correct diameter for your exhaust to give you a little extra in terms of peak power and a minimal loss in terms of low down torque.
