Gearbox on gti 6speed

Kerrin,

Very very sadly we are both in the same boat together...

As of 2 days ago, I was toying with a Cooper S to my demise.... after I'd finished losing with him..

my 1st gear would not go..

I am now driving starting from 2nd gear and struggling but getting by..

IT IS THE SYNCRO as said by L119... I had this confirmed by 4 garages and prices did vary and it's not cheap.. the last garage telling me to stay clear of any new VW's, A3's and particularly new golf's as all parts used are now cheaper quality and they are replacing boxes all-day long for these...

you will need to get your gearbox re-conditioned.. I was given two choices, either 1st gear synchro replaced with no warranty or get ALL synchros replaced and gears checked over/repaired for 650 quid with a year's warranty..

I decided to start from 2nd gear from now on :coffee:

Good luck

Not heard of a GTI box failing before so this is a suprise to me.

Unsure what the GTI 6-speed is used on other than the Lupo due to its size, but 998 GTI's in the UK according to VWG and a fair portion of them are 5-speeds, so the 6-speed is a rare box in my opinion

Well I have - I'm on my third

To be fair though, the original didn't really need replacing, and the replacement never felt right (that inevitably broke). Third seems fine though.

I have to say I had this problem with the second box - and eventually, with a bit of driving the lower gears came back. In fact the first time I was able to get back in to 1st, there was a loud bang and everything was peachy again.

Like I say though, over the long term that box was no good - the one I have now is fine and hasn't ever done it.

As for recons and repairs - that box is unique to only half of all Lupo GTIs as far as I know, so this is probably the best place to find one.

You'll be very lucky to find a 6 speed box without having to buy an engine aswell.

I think Luke waited nearly 2 years for one to come up on its own...

Id buy one from the stealer, yes its expencive, but you do get two years parts and labour warranty with it.

Although I must add, I would suggest bleeding your clutch before you start thinking about gearboxes!

A rebuild for the 6-speed box is the only choice.

I've tried calling just about anywhere for prices... but every box shop suggests doing/exchanging the whole box as it will be best and covered by 1 year warranty only on a full recon..

I'm based in london and a lot of the german car garages I contacted admitted that newer cars are getting worse on quality. One garage even said that vw are in 3rd place and the Japs are in the lead.

I've only owned my '03 Lupo gti for 2months and I have this messed up gearbox! Also my first german car which I chose for the reliability reputation!

Not good.

take very good care of it!

i would ask for a top special brand/sports gear oil as it would be a higher spec than standard vw oil. for £1,264 get only the best for your new box.

choose from here for a great selection of oils. opie oils

register on the vwaudi forum or any on the list named on the opie website and you get a good discount. i used them myself and they are very helpful.

clupo lupo could get its own discount aswell if any admin wanted to email them. they sell engine oils, filters, plugs etc.
