Rings, valves and valve guides all wear out.

Beam to calipers is GTi specific but you can use a mk4 golf one but you have to go around the doors a little.

Could be crank or cam. Could be 109. -
Maybe it's the manifold pressure sensor? I've had this. **** builds up and a cheeky spray of carb cleaner down the throttle as someone revs has cleaned it up enough for it to go away in the past. If that doesn't work then you can always use the carb cleaner to check for air leaks around the inlet manifold.
