I had to change a fifth gear with a chip in a tooth, all I can say is the symptoms were that it popped out every rotation but the passenger could hold it in with their foot.

Tbh, I've bust a fair few of them and it hasn't been a problem reusing the remains as a buffer. They can be removed when doing the job by prying out the side clips where it attaches to the pedal and leaving it on the ball of the servo. Just depends how motivated on the day.

The potentiometer on the pedal box has started to fail. Sad times. It idles higher so you can drive it to your nearest VW dealership as a safety feature.
