  1. Tried an oxygen sensor emulator? Used in LPG conversions.
  2. What do you mean? The ECU is sampling the TPS many times a second, so it knows exactly what's going on. If you're talking about the throttle valve opening delay, that is part of the emissions control program. In days of old, carburettors used to squirt a neat jet of petrol in to the mix to quench the mix. Nowadays, the ECU allows the revs to build up as it gradually opens the throttle, keeping a reasonably high plenum vacuum until full demand is met. Ok, so it all happens in about 1/2 a second....
  3. On solstice day! Just in time for the 40 degree heat arriving in ten minutes. Do you know how much gas it needed to get the pressures correct?

    Change gear ratios...

More info for anyone interested in all our 085 gearboxes... i think I've found the point of origin. The old VW Derby...
  5. Spotted while I was going northbound Sunday PM 16/6/19. You were wearing a baseball cap on backwards. Nice tidy, lowered example, but sure which model. I was in my silver SDI. Don't think you spotted me.
  6. The little plastic dufus thingy has probably popped off. So when you think you're selecting R, it's actually 1st. The left-right stick motion control is defective by the sounds of things. Part number 6N0711575A. Could be something else though, like something loose?
  7. What model you have? Sure it's not drive by wire (not cable)?
  8. Nice. How much did you pay? -only to see where the market is for gtis at the mo...
  9. God yeah. Forgot that there was a 1.4! OMG. Yes i only use it for long comfy "road trips". They ARE a very comfy car...

    Change gear ratios...

    More research... have found out that all the following cars used the same basic 085 gearbox internals, some with 5 speed some only 4. All the same shafts which is nice: VOLKSWAGEN: POLO MK1, MK2, MK3 1.0 (1995-2001), 1.05 (1985-1996), 1.3 (1982-1995), 1.3 COUPE (1985-1990), 1.3 COUPE GT (1982-1987), 1.4 (1996-2001), 1.6 (1994-1999), 1.6 16V (1998-1999) GTI 1.6 16V (1999-2001), 1.3 D (1986-1990), 1. 4D (1990-1994), 1.4 TDI (1999-2001), 1.7 SDI (1997-2001), 1.9 D, SDI, TDI (1995-2001). VOLKSWAGEN: LUPO 1.0 (1998-2005), 1.4 (2001-2005), 1.4 16V (1998-2004), 1.2 TDI (1999-2005). VOLKSWAGEN: VENTO 1.4 (1991-1995), 1.6 (1991-1994). VOLKSWAGEN: CADDY 1.4 (1995-2004), 1.6 (1995-2004). VOLKSWAGEN: JETTA 1. 3 (1985-1992). VOLKSWAGEN: GOLF MK2 1.3 (1987-1992) / GOLF MK3 1.4 (1991-1999), 1.6 (1992-1994). AUDI - A2 1.2 TDi (2000-2005). so now it's mix and match time. My quest continues.
  11. With a tail wind. What a rubbish car. Terrible engine design. Why do i still have it...
  12. This is depressing. back to MPG... i once got 51mpg from my mk 4 golf 1.6 8 valve 👍🏻
  13. What about the HUGE classic car scene here in the UK... not just diesels. ANYTHING older than about 2008. Apparently the London LEZ is being used as a scheme tester for places like southampton, newcastle, leeds, manchester, bristol, birmingham, york and here in Reading. Yeah, you're right about the gov getting rid of 'dirty' cars. The idea at the moment they have is, yes, a scrappage scheme to help you buy a BRAND NEW CAR on finance. Great if you're in full time employment (me), but what about many many people who can't afford the weekly payments (£3k+ / year more to find), like cleaners, gardeners and low paid workers on tax credits. Doesn't work for them. They still run about in a marginally safe old mk4 golf worth £200. They carry their buckets, mops, rakes, spades etc. In the back of the car. They're now being told to go by bus or train/tube. Get real...
  14. The companies I've been talking to have been working specifically on retrofit gear for vans and minibuses- some equipped with vdub diesels. With my background, I siad I was willing to bung in some time to help crack the aftermarket thing for older dubs, like SDI lupos (and golfs, Beetles and other small engined stuff). Right now there is no demand, but once the whole of london LEZ kicks off big time, it'll be all over the media. Anyone with an older "vehicle" won't be allowed to keep it inside the LEZ without spending £££. There are a lot of older cars in London. There will be marches, protests and such... Fact: the emissions from a relatively well maintained SDI are equal to the very newest dubs. Ok, so Nox is marginal without urea treatment because of the high compression ratio, but still very good. It doesn't take much to fix it. The ecu already provides live injector quantity data which is the main data for urea injection. A small urea tank, a microcontroller (like an LPG injection controller), some plumbing and an exhaust mod is all that is needed. The wholesale cost of the kit is about £120. Retail currently is over a grand and "installers" (authorised by the mayor of london) are milking it big time. Talk is already underway about restricting older cars (diesel and petrol) from going into most of the UK's big towns and cities within 2 years. This will affect everyone...

Yeah well a generic pic for effect... didn't think anyone would notice! I'm going to contact this breakers in Bremen and see if I can get a box of various bits sent over. There are so many 3L Lupos in German breakers yards! https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/vw-lupo-3l-diesel-schlachtfest-ersatzteile-spender/1141913597-223-35

    Change gear ratios...

Yeah, what's £600 or there abouts... ah, small change? So this is what I'll be buying. 2 cogs and a syncro clutch. Works out about the same price for a bar of pure silver by weight. Special stuff this vdub steel
  17. Yeah I must be honest and say that didn't realise that the excess on a replacement windscreen through my insurance is £250. "Free windscreen repairs" means exactly that... just fixing little stone chips with resin- Not a new one. D'oh. I'll have to drive around and see if i can find someone local who can do it for cash. £260 from national windscreens... who are these cowboys!?
  18. I've been investigating conversion companies who convert 'dirty diesels' to clean, for use in the soon to be London wide low emissions zone. Nothing older than a 2015 diesel car or 2008 petrol will be allowed... Apparently our little SDIs are actually already below the 0.7 smoke limit (like brand new diesel cars). Even says so on the VIN sticker in the engine bay- 0.7 in the lower right corner. So technically they already are clean enough. Last MOT, one of mine with 135k miles tested to 0.5 average which apparently is amazing. I have deleted the EGR and gas flowed the inlet, but I still think they are a relatively clean engine. The EGR is what seems to soot them up badly. Not such a "horrible dirty diesel" after all...
  19. About 45cm long. Right across the drivers zone. mot fail. Mot due in two months. Stone hit the top edge of the screen, just above the sun visor. Over bumpy road and i watched the crack grow and grow and grow.... not good.
  20. Uh, ok. I know nufink aboyt chemistry. So it reacts with air when hot. Gotcha. 👍🏻 Mind you if the HG went on a 3L, you may as well throw it away. Head bolts connect right through to the bottom end holding the main bearings in! Not something you'd want to change.
  21. Bang and crack. I need a windscreen... Being quoted silly money, like £260. The person I used to know in the car glass business has moved on, who told me that a new untinted glass from Pilkingtons or other suppliers is about £63 to buy wholesale. It takes 45 mins to pull the old one and put a new one in. Are the likes of national windscreens, autoglass etc just printing money or something? The prices are crazy. My insurance company has just said that they could supply and fit for £250. Their standard excess price. Normal price without windscreen cover is £380!!!! What?! what have you paid? if there was a car in a breakers within an hours drive, I'd wire cut the old one out and fit it myself. I'm a bit cross to say the least! 😡
  22. Ok, here we go... (I'm assuming good head gasket, normal fuel mixture, ok brakes, ok cat and normal ign timing. is there coolant in the system? does the water pump run ok and circulate coolant? does the thermostat open and keep the temp gauge at 90 without moving once warmed up and driving normally? Is the right thermostat fitted... do the fan(s) work? does the interior heating work? does the coolant level stay constant (no leak or crack somewhere)? does coolant circulate through the radiator (can you feel warm fluid leaving the rad through the hose, when engine is hot?)
