Driveshaft Problems,

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone had any experiences with dicky driveshafts from VW for a Lupo GTi '03

I spent £489 on a offside driveshaft on friday, had it fitted on saturday, by saturday night it had chewed it up.

Can anyone help, as I'm not too sure whats happening with it? It was a brand new genuine part.

The car is very low and stiff, would that have any ill effects on the driveshaft?

Cheers

Pretty sure it wasn't hitting the chassis, surely would have heard something like that...

Can you tell me where i can get one from?

I've tried everywhere, the only place I could find one was from the dealers and they are a rip!

no mate, as far as I'm aware its not rubbing anything, surely you would be able to hear something like that.

the price tag is well steep, but the only place I could find one was from dub dealers.

GSF/Euro/Davmac/SAF even 24/7 spares couldn't help me.

its got to be a faulty part surely...?

right... apparently it hasn't chewed up the second shaft, its pushing the drive shaft through the joint housing of the gearbox. there is a gap behind the flange where it is attached to the gearbox, its allowing the driveshaft to push through into the gap and lose drive. is this a fault with the new shaft or is this a common thing, because i don't understand, am I making sense?? argh!

If I remember correctly I read somewhere a while back about runnning low affecting the drive spleen at the gb end, but I think it was really low. Maybe Mitch or Tigz posted it.

Thank you mate, I'll have a quick look about.

Ive took the shaft back to dub, they are going to get it replaced... and apologised profusely.

Hopefully the next one will be a little better, e.g actually go more than 20 miles. Fingers crossed!

The output flanges on the gearbox are bolted together through the diff with an M8 bolt, so I'm not sure about the gap you mention.

I had a very low car some time ago that would strip the splines on the end of the actual driveshaft, where it connects to the CV joint. It would usually happen when combining a big suspension compression with peak engine torque.

I can't make a complete driveshaft including CV joints any more expensive than £339.05 inc. VAT, They are cheaper as an exchange unit too.

You should speak with Luopboz, he's a main dealer & he quoted me way less than that, from his recent PM

Driveshafts £165.00 each (£235.09 retail, each!!)**

Outer Driveshaft Joints £95.00 each (£128.82 retail each!)

i drive a lupo gti 2001 plate and my driveshaft went twice

i thought it was a clutch problem so took it to a clutch specialist but because i knew the guy and he deals with lowered motors all the time, this is what he told me

because the car is lowered... everything down there was pulled further away from each other (or something like that) and so instead of the driveshaft sitting right in the cv joint/gaitor or whatever... it sat on its edge and hence kept popping out.

he came up with a solution on previous motors which involves adding an extra bit (or something..not to sure) and it hasnt went since.

i hope this makes sense to you lol and hope you get it sorted :)

it really isnt easy getting a 2nd hand part...ive tried lol brand new cost me £235 from stoke vw dealers and an extra £12 to get it delivered to glasgow and a further £60 to get it fitted ...its not a cheap job for gtis :(
