Putney
I looked into both those options last month... I was thinking of moving on. However I decided both of them need a garage which I don't have at the moment. Out of the two I would go with the Lotus... Better engineering. Simple! In the end I bought another Ducati! I know you said you weren't into Boxsters, but to be fair my Dad had one and found it ideal for everyday use. Not too thirsty, practical, comfortable, sporty when you wanted it to be. Not too dear on fuel if you get the 2.7L too.
MattyB
I've "done" the Honda thing with an ITR, great car, but not for me. Skyline - nahFord Escort/Focus - Don't like Fords And I wouldn't go from a 320bhp V6 Alfa to a Ford 4cyl, Turbo'd or not VW GTi/R32 - Would never be a patch on the GTA.Lancer EVO's - Almost went there with an EVO 6 TME, too garish for me now. Impreza's - Too commonBoxster - Too common, and its not a 911...sorry!VX220 - Badge snobbery wouldn't allow me to have one over an Elise. Noble M12 - Not keenSkoda VRS - The devils fuel. I'd cry going from the GTA engine to a TDi!Appriciate the suggestions, but I've scoured the classifieds numerous times its always come back to the Lotus/TVR offerings. If I could stretch the budget past ÂŁ20k then it opens up other options for me, but below that price nothing else has tickled me fancy. MattyB
DickyP has just got an Octavia vRS, lovely car, but it's not where my money would go I would go for this.....http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1963896.htmÂŁ22k though, for a non-Supercharged? For a few extra thousand I could get an ExigeS with all the benefits a 'charger brings, although I'm seriously pushing my budget there.Caterham not come into the equasion?http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1913188.htmYes please! As much as a Caterham would be awesome, I can't help but wonder where my ÂŁ21k goes. An Exige would offer 95% of the thrills, yet offers 200% more usability. If I could have a 5-car garage, then yes, a Caterham would certainly be in the collection. On a 2-car driveway, I'm afraid its out!

MattyB
considered or been in a vauxhall monaro? should be useable and fun. and bit different, was one with 635hp less than 25k miles for 18 grand on pistonheads. Not keen on the Monaro, but like the VXR8. Unfortunately, I've become something of an interior whore - the LupoGTi and AlfaGTA both have great interiors, and I can forgive the Elise because of its minimalist functionality, but the VXR8 interior is nasty. The flipside is that a good VXR8 fetches about ÂŁ20-21k, and I'd be tempted to wait a little longer for RS4's to dip below ÂŁ25k or find the extra.Of course, in both cases I'd just have one as an only car, and currently I'm after a 2nd car/sunday car/trackday car.Matty, et-all,Example of how fast a series 1 Elise/Exige can be with Honda K20 power. http://www.vimeo.com/11578403Decision made now Matty?S/C Honda Exige = nearly ÂŁ30k They're good value when they've got nearly ÂŁ15k's worth of mods, and there is one on PH for ÂŁ28k which is only ÂŁ5-6k more than a good S1 Exige. And while I could stretch to ÂŁ28k at an absolute push, I'd be financially crippling myself with a large loan....
MattyB
This thread was a bad idea, I blame Darren for putting silly ideas in my head ÂŁ10k loan over 5 years is only ÂŁ198 a month. While I wouldn't want that kind of repayment on top of running costs for a TVR, I'd hope the Exige with that setup would be pretty bulletproof as the VHPD is really the main weakpoint of a standard Exige.Of course, it'd never be a 'collectors item' like a standard S1 Exige is set to be, but I'm not a collector so I don't care.http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2079435.htmTell a lie, its not S/C, just regular Honda. S/C one is ÂŁ33k on there!
twisty b-road
With you having discounted some of the other suggestions I might make, I'd say get a TVR because the Exige will be just too similar to your Elise.A mate of mine had an early mid-life crisis and, never having shown any interest in anything petrolhead ever, bought a T350C. He got rid of it after 3 months because it scared him silly, but I did get a go in it before he bailed. Have you tried a Caterham? Expensive yes but they're the most in-your-face thing this side of a motorbike. Not a very safe road car granted, but for a track day... Putney
I know they in theory can go up in money, but the running costs probably wipes off any profit you could have made... Buying a car youre not going to use in the hope its worth more in the future is pointless. Much better ways of making money.... LINCOLNSHIRESLUPOGTI
Matty - with the Honda converted Lotus, I was meaning to get an Elise with the Honda engine in, realised the Exige were a little on the high side of the budget range. Not my thing but what about Lotus Europa? Potential to be very quick (see Hofmanns of Henley who have got a well sorted Europa race car) but might be quite boring compared to Exige and T350. Turbo might be something different for you as a change from n/a, though if you are like me you will find turbo engines boring and lacking in throttle response. If you like interiors then the Elise S2 Elise/Exige is pretty nice in a minimalist way. T350 is obviously beautiful but more focussed as a sporty GT rather than racer, depends on your preference.
