GTIChris
Has it got a clock that needs a constant feed ? (just guessing here)
Pete
You've obviously wired it up wrong, but you know this already. I take it you mean the h/u is always turned on even with the key out?
craig_allman
yeah its always on even with the key out
craig_allman
Has it got a clock that needs a constant feed ? (just guessing here)no it doesn't, the whole stereo is just always on and because it doesn't have an off button on the head unit i have no way of turning it off
jpsh120
Get a multimeter and check the feed from the main loom, one of them (either red or yellow) should be a switched live. If for some strange reason there isn't one it is very easy to take one off the ignition barrel.
aziz360
I'm probably completely wrong but my golf used to do it sometimes and it was because when I pulled the key out the two connect in the barrel kept getting stuck and didn't come together Sorry meant to say 2 contacts in the barrel
Pete
Shouldn't it always have a constant live to keep its memory of settings and stations tho? Sounds like you've wired your switched live from the h/u into the permanent live on the cars loom.

Pete
Usually red and yellow, most h/u come with a diagram or the loom itself labelled.
Skezza
Did you fit a wiring harness?
Jared-One
Failing everything else you could always use a fuse tap to create a switch live...

jpsh120
It does sound like the red/yellow permanent/switched lives are not connected correctly and it should be an easy fix.
craig_allman
ive tested the red and yellow and they are both permanent lives any idea what to do next to solve this? thanks.
Pete
They can't both be permanent lives, were you testing them with the key in the ignition?
craig_allman
no i tested them without the key in the ignition. anyone know if it would work if i connected it to somewhere like the rear window heater switch?
Pete
Can you get a pic of your connections, really looking for that big block connection that put the car loom to the h/u loom.
craig_allman
the guy that had it before bodged it all to **** but i think ive worked out whats wrong now just need to know if it will work if i connect it too the rear window heater?
Pete
Only if you have that turned on the whole time, you're better off biting the bullet and figuring it out and doing it properly.
craig_allman
so if i connected it to the heater switch would i not be able to use the heater no more?
Pete
You'd need to splice the wiring so that you don't break the circuit fully as the switch is obviously needing a live feed in order for it to work. I urge you not to do this tho.
craig_allman
okay, any reason why you dont recommend doing this?
Pete
You're just adding to the problem, instead of solving it, plus when it comes to selling it you don't wanna be the guy that says 'yeah, don't turn off the rear demister, the radio will turn off.' It's a billion times better to get to the root cause of a problem and sort it instead of carry on cutting corners and bodging it, itl just lead to more issues.
