Gti mpg dropping?!?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've recently noticed my last couple of tanks (full to click with optimax) have got me a lot less miles than normal. I have always got no matter how I drive about 170 (small trips) to a tank but now I'm getting around 140 all of a sudden. I had a similar problem on my 4motion and think it was the temp sender, could this be a possibility even though my gauge is working perfectly at the mo?

Thanks,

Patrick

Do you know how much fuel in terms of litres you are putting in? Try filling it from near enough empty, iirc you can get up to about 36 litres in to the tank forgetting what the manual says.

I have herd before for the breather pipe on the filler neck to get blocked, this means that the fuel backs up alot easier in the filler neck and causes the fuel pump to shut off earlier than it should.

Thats all i ever got out my Arosa. And yes it was pretty much brimmed. Couldnt be arsed standing there letting it click for a further £5.

On a long motorway run i could see 280-300 max. Once saw near 350 but that 2k revs at 60mph all the way.

You didn't own a GTI though, sport engines are known for being thirsty.

Just filled up with super, was near the red and got 26 litres in with some clicking. Last tank again just got 140 miles. Off to a friend tomorrow who's a vag specialist so hopefully shed some light and will let you know.

Thanks for responses

It's a secret...

 It's just a little lever inside the filler nozzle that lets the air out of the tank, allowing you to squeeze more petrol in. You should only really use it if you're going straight on a long journey to use it up though, because you need the expansion space. It has nothing to do with your problem though, 140 miles is definitely too low for a GTI. The lowest I've gotten was 180 miles til the light came on.

I have found most pumps have a lip that is perfectly placed to press it as you put the nozzle in

Yeah, I just hold it down as I'm filling, no need to stop and start all the time.

Right just back, vagcom showed no faults only strange thing was the temperature (outside) was showing a's 40.5 yet the dash showed 6!!! The car may be running to suit this high temp when its not i guess so going to change the temp sender and see how it goes.

40 litres gets me about 260 - 270ish miles.

Motorway driving on a 60 miles a day commute, average speed probably about 80ish...

Thats about the same as me. Recently i have neen on an economy stint, and reckon I can crack 350 to a tank if I stay at 60 provided there is no traffic
