Tricky88
Hi, I've recently noticed my last couple of tanks (full to click with optimax) have got me a lot less miles than normal. I have always got no matter how I drive about 170 (small trips) to a tank but now I'm getting around 140 all of a sudden. I had a similar problem on my 4motion and think it was the temp sender, could this be a possibility even though my gauge is working perfectly at the mo? Thanks,Patrick
99hjhm
Mine uses more fuel in cold weather.
northwick
170 isn't that good so I'd say theres always been something wrong with it.
Tricky88
Yeah I hear all different miles from gti owners, regularlyServiced and checked with vag com last service so not sure tbh. Anyone have any similar issues, you may be right with the cold weather
jon_273
Cars always use a bit more fuel in winter. Low ambient temperature and having the heater on mean the engine takes longer to warm up.Do you do lots of short journeys?
Tricky88
Yeah I do a few short journeys during the week and usually a good long run at the weekend. I did think 170 was low for a gti but apart from the winter I can't think of any reason for it to drop. Patrick
jamiea7x
I'd give a good service, sparks plugs coilpack oil oil filter and air filter and see how u get on after that..
CasperGTI
Do you know how much fuel in terms of litres you are putting in? Try filling it from near enough empty, iirc you can get up to about 36 litres in to the tank forgetting what the manual says.I have herd before for the breather pipe on the filler neck to get blocked, this means that the fuel backs up alot easier in the filler neck and causes the fuel pump to shut off earlier than it should. Tricky88
I'll check the next time I fill up but from (approx) just before the empty light it always takes around £32-35 of super will find out in litres. Is that how much it costs others to fill their gti's?Thanks,Patrick
bikemad04
When I fill up it usually takes £35 ish but recently I put £45 ish in thought that was weird but put it down to cold weather, Of £35 I get 200 -220 ish miles Of £45 I got 300 miles. Cooper_GTI
I normally get about 200 miles of town driving to a tank of Tesco 99RON momentum (121.9 ish per litre)
treblet
Anywhere from 180-220 is about right from a tank of fuel imo.Did you ever fill your tank?!You can get 300 miles out of a full tank on a GTI without driving too much like an old woman. treblet
Thats all i ever got out my Arosa. And yes it was pretty much brimmed. Couldnt be arsed standing there letting it click for a further £5.On a long motorway run i could see 280-300 max. Once saw near 350 but that 2k revs at 60mph all the way.You didn't own a GTI though, sport engines are known for being thirsty.
Tricky88
Just filled up with super, was near the red and got 26 litres in with some clicking. Last tank again just got 140 miles. Off to a friend tomorrow who's a vag specialist so hopefully shed some light and will let you know. Thanks for responsesPatrick

Defcon5
Nar thats just annoying standing pressing that.I have found most pumps have a lip that is perfectly placed to press it as you put the nozzle in

Tricky88
I know the button well
Philplop
It's a secret... It's just a little lever inside the filler nozzle that lets the air out of the tank, allowing you to squeeze more petrol in. You should only really use it if you're going straight on a long journey to use it up though, because you need the expansion space. It has nothing to do with your problem though, 140 miles is definitely too low for a GTI. The lowest I've gotten was 180 miles til the light came on.I have found most pumps have a lip that is perfectly placed to press it as you put the nozzle inYeah, I just hold it down as I'm filling, no need to stop and start all the time. R99
40 litres gets me about 260 - 270ish miles. Motorway driving on a 60 miles a day commute, average speed probably about 80ish... Edited November 20, 2010 by R99
Tricky88
Right just back, vagcom showed no faults only strange thing was the temperature (outside) was showing a's 40.5 yet the dash showed 6!!! The car may be running to suit this high temp when its not i guess so going to change the temp sender and see how it goes.Patrick
treblet
A faulty temperature sensor can often lead to problems like this.Have you changed plugs and leads etc too?

Recently i have neen on an economy stint, and reckon I can crack 350 to a tank if I stay at 60 provided there is no traffic
Philplop
I just did 326 to my last tank, on a drive to Leicester and back. Cruising between 70-90, then some town driving.
