i find if you put some ky gel around the rim,it stops the pain.

Splitting and refreshing mine at the minute, polishing wheel on a bench grinder leaves an awesome finish.

Gonna be fiddly without splitting them though due to getting round all the bolts.

Should be rescuable though.

A classic was to protect chrome is to mix petrol and regular lithium grease and brush it on. Its thin enough that it won't be disturbed by fast motion, but thick enough to stop the rain getting through :)

As the petrol evaporates it will stick to the part you need protecting :)

For what its worth I'd say take the tyres off, get the bolts and valves out and give them a good repolish and a wax. You'll spend ages getting around the bolts.

Agreed, its taken me about 3 hours to get all 120 bolts out of mine this week.

Will probably take a day to polish them on the wheel. :o

Have a look through the following, whilst doing mine I found pretty much everything is covered in them. :)

The bolts should be alright if they were torqued correctly when being built.

What sort of polishing kit have you bought?

I'm using a polishing wheel on a bench grinder.

I found that you have to sort of wear the polishing wheel in before it starts to work

properly. I did this with an old bit of steel which was also handy for practicing with before

attacking the BBS.

Some photo's of what I've done so far.

How they were (not too bad really):

After some polishing on the wheel (need to be finished by hand):

Also stripped the red paint off the baskets so they can be powdercoated:
