sgtazza Posted July 4, 2008 Report Share Posted July 4, 2008 I've just had a quote from VW Beadles in Dartfordto have Belts and a '40k Service' carried out is gonna cost me £631.04 (inclusive of VAT and labour)!!!!!(belt change £370.13 and the 40k service £260.91)Does this sound right to you guys? It seems awful steep. (i know why they're called the main stealers now)Any recommendations on a good VW garage in the Dartford/Sidcup/Bexleyheath area? Service cost there is a rip off.Get VW to do the belt as they give you a two year warranty.Get a specialist to do the rest of the 40k service and stamp the book. I'm gonna do what others have said, get VW to do the belt for the warranty, and a place next to my dads work that specialises in VW to service it and stamp the book! Nicki Posted July 5, 2008 Report Share Posted July 5, 2008 VW Wakefield charged me £140 for a 40k serviceIn which case I very much doubt they did the cambelt change.Looking at your profile info, your 40k service would've been due in 2005 (or earlier depending on mileage) as your car is a 2001 GTI - which is before they changed the service interval for the cambelt from 50k miles (5 yrs) to 40k miles (4 yrs).I had my cambelt changed when I had my 50k service (as my car is also a 2001 model & therefore reached 5 yrs old before they changed the service interval) which cost me £300ish for the cambelt and about £200 for the service.Most main dealers charge around the same for servicing - based on the cost of parts and the approximate amount of labour time required.If you want to save money, I'd also suggest getting the cambelt done at the main dealer but the service done by a specialist. elajf1 Posted July 6, 2008 Report Share Posted July 6, 2008 Just as another note, my sister had her belts and tensioners changed at an independent garage for £120. I don't use VW for any of my servicing anymore. The last service on mine 70k VW wanted £120, my local indepedent family run place charged me £70 and got me in on a saturday morning. Don't risk it with the cambelt though, its the tensioners that are the problem. Another poor design by VW. My tensioners split apart at 32k. I was lucky to catch the problem before they chewed through the belt !!I check the belt weekly now I have just hit 70k, it will be time for another change soon.I find it amazing that VW can be so dismissive of the problem when I spoke to them. Apparently it is normal...... Looks like I'll have to swallow the belt change cost!There are a couple of VW specialists in my area by the look of it, so i'll get a quote from them on the service to at least try and save a bit of dosh! I know a couple of poeple who do 35-40K a year, so if they owned a VW they would need a cambelt yearly Yeah, right! Was that lookers?We got our caravelles cambelt done there, and an MOT and service, i think it was about £600 roughly. Its a bigger job on a 2.5 T4 than a lupo too! We must have got a good discount! Don't let the dealers crush the small garages!!!£90 because you have an 8v engine.If its a 16v engine your looking at double the costs...And that's not even the point, some specialists can't get the 16v cam belts set up right which is why the majority of people go to VW themselves.
