urgent help needed!

hiya, went to see potential new car today, mentioned it in my "new members" post (black gti, 2001, 5 speed, 34k on clock, taxed until july, mot until december, and comes with private irish plate) the bloke wants £5995 ovno for it.

was awesome to drive, checked oil, lights for water ingress, all usual things fine. but then theres bits that would need doing that I noticed . . .

- large stone chip towards top of windscreen starting to crack (so id want to replace the whole thing)

- tyres worn on outside edges so id want to be changing them soon too

- interior imaculate except from inside handles flaky and worn (dont know if i can replace them)

- quite a few hairline scratches to the primer on it (only because i was very closely i saw them)

- a back corner of the bumper was dull black as if attempted to be touched up

- ariel rubber was peeling but thats nothing

- most important thing i noticed is that even though the drivers door shut fine, when i opened it to get out, it made two rather loud clunking noises and was stiff when it did it, ive heard the doors can drop on them so was wondering if this may be that noise, if so is it much to get fixed?

basically fell in love with the car  but quite a few niggling things that id want to get sorted to make it immaculate (which it was described as & isnt).

really want it but dont know what to offer him considering all of the above and that he wants ovno to the price. just think its to good to forget about considering the milage and how nice it was to drive.

need to ring him back tonight to say whether i want it or not. otherwise he has other people to ring back who have enquired to let them come to see it!

argh! dont know what to do! any help or opinions would be great!!!

thanks

I dont think you will got one without flaky interior handles, they are worn on my mums, and thats on 24k! I would imagine they are replaceable. IIRC my passenger door clunks when its opened, but seems perfectly fine apart from that, so I dont know if it denotes an underlying problem

Get him to knock of a few hundred for the windscreen, and then another hundred for the paintwork and you may well be on to a winner!

Check straps are cheap and easy to replace on the doors. Very common fault.

Handles again, are cheap (ish) and easy to replace. Also common fault with the GTI.

Headlining needs to be lowered at the back, and one bolt holds the arial in place, the arial base is easy to replace, not sure on the price but it wont be much.

£5500 then go up.

door check straps are 12 quid ,interior handles are 15 quid .

i'd max out at 5650 tops

This sounds like a knackered check strap which is common and cheap and easy to fix. The part is £15 and unless you've never picked up a spanner you'll be able to do it yourself.

Are Lupo GTI's really that expensive?

i wouldnt say that was expensive, i'd say 5700 is a good price for the low mileage

:shades: congrats on the purchase! you'll smile every time you drive i can assure you that!!!

I only drove it a few miles and didnt even put my foot down seeing I was in the city, and I was smiling like an idiot already! Couldnt believe the amount of grip even just coming off roundabouts, didnt want to get out lol  Just have to go about getting windscreen and tyres sorted as soon as I get it, can do the other bits as and when B) Been looking at them for so long, insurance is still hard to swallow but think itll definately be worth it, couldnt let it pass me by only being a few miles away and with that milage. Dropping deposit over tomorrow then got to sort the loan out . . .

good buy..welcome to club!

stick your punto on pistonheads, autotrader etc.

reminds me that i need to get my passenger door latch done as thats gone!

Yeh will do, been out there with the autoglym and hoover today so its immaculate inside, will be washing it tomorrow and taking photos ready for putting it up on the net, will miss it being 1st car etc, never let me down over the 3 years ive had it just hoping the lupo does the same! ^_^

is it on shocks/springs or coilies? because if you think its got good grip now when its on spongy suspension and im guessing dunlops...then drop it and put on some rainsports and you'll never get it to move what ever speed you throw it into an island ;)

its totally standard so i'll need tips and makes of coilovers etc to get (when ive got the money ha ha) and yeh got dunlops on but nearly bald by the looks so il be geting them changed straight away. Just really looking forward to getting it home now :) If I can get anything to make it grip even better then il definately have to add it to my "to do" list lol. Windscreen chip/crack repaired, tyres and the check strap things for both doors think will be the first. Then little bits just to make it perfect like interior handles, the bit on the back bumper which has been touched up done properly then just the ariel replacing (its peeling for some reason). Oooh im all excited!!! Going to drop cheque down now in a bit so can admire it a bit more ha ha :shades:

For £5,700 you can have my silver '03 plate with a whopping 6-speed box but first gear doesn't work. Also corner crack on windscreen, door handles rubbers scuffed, worn arial rubber, but 4 new tyres! 52k on clock.. I bought the car going through a silly phase, I own 2 R5 GTT's and 3 cars is too much. Quote on the 1st gear repair is about 450 but that includes rebuilding the gearbox. Starts from 2nd gear just fine.

interested? oh and a full tank of super-unleaded too.
