Hi

Im hoping may be able to get some help/advise...

My son has a 2001 1.4 Lupo Sport. We need to find a replacement gearbox as his driveshaft broke & damaged his gearbox making a hole in it.

We are struggling to find one, im aware we could maybe replace with other gearboxes but not sure what to look for to ensure it will fit and wondered if anyone could make any recommendations & also if anywhere like an online shop to buy one which is not gonna cost a fortune so i can get him back on the road.

Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

I think, but not sure it's an 02J box, but could be wrong. The only things you need to check are the gear ratios. Regular box is 085...

There's a 3 letter code stamped in the top along with all the corrosion, which tells you what ratio it is. :)

So only gti and tdi don't have the 085? I was convinced one of the others has something different?

That means @jennywren00899 could use a regular 085, but ideally not from a 1.0 basic (would rev too high). Hey, I wonder if an SDI box would work in a 1.4 sport? A bit leggy maybe in fifth, but a bit more economical.

I just looked up a 2000 Sport on Autotrader, that is fitted with a ETB coded 085 box. ETKA lists a few other gearboxes with the same part number that would fit:

DXJ, FFL, FHX, FHZ

All of these have the VW part number 085 300 053 RX and has the final drive ratio of 62/16.

A friend of mine had a sport with a broken box. He could not find a replacement. In the end he fitted one from a 6n2 Polo gti. The ratios where a little different on 1st and 2nd the rest where ok
