1.2TDI potential

Hey, for the last few weeks I was skimming through all the info I could find about making more power with the 3L, since the gearbox is shot in mine I was wondering if the manual swap and then turbo and injector upgrades were a realistic expectation while still driving the car on a daily, reliably and economically. Since there is a lot of conflicting information I'm now wondering if it's just a dream.

I would be aiming for at least 60kW but perfectly around 80. I have some good tuners around me, so the most important question I guess is: can the original engine and the 085 gearbox from the 1.4 handle that power reliably or is there another gearbox I should use for this cause?

Thanks for the help!

Mine is a 1.4 tdi on a rebuilt gear box and has done 20k miles since a remap which pushed the bhp to between 100 and 110, big miles overall now as it is approaching 180k, but still as fast and as fuel efficient as ever

Anything is possible with a complete new map/program in the ECU. Reliability will suffer, thats all.

Use the box from a 9n polo tdi :)

Do you by chance know the gearbox number/code?

do you think it’s worth going all the way with manual gearbox, turbo, etc…. Or should i just go for a remap and be happy with a couple extra kW?

Before starting anything, make sure you can find someone to change the ECU... If you run a 3L as a manual without changing the ECU software, many people simply leave the gear select connection in N. The car will function, but use lots of fuel and have low power.

Software first. The rest is easy... 👍🏻 :)

And I’m guessing there are no open source tunes? Either vag-tuning.com or i go to a local tuner and start from scratch?

Correct. There is someone on the German Lupo Club .DE who knows a company that can remap a 3L into full manual mode- so there is a solution already. We don't have 3Ls in the UK, so not much use to us...

I would go for the manual gearbox and a remap, a remap on its own might overwhelm the auto box

Hey, so some time had passed. I haven't gotten to the upgrades yet, but my  reverse gear isn't working any more and the rear drums are driving me crazy. I'm now thinking of converting them to discs and I was told that it should be doable with seat cordoba king pin, discs, and mk4 golf calipers. i will try to find a rear frame with discs already on first though :D. And simultaneously start collecting parts for the manual conversion.

Took me some time to reply, last time i did anything major was blocking off the rear drum cylinders since they would leak a week after being replaced and just today i managed to find a way to convert them to disc brakes, ordered lupo 6n2 gti stub axles with bearings, carriers and callipers for 180€ with shipping if anyone cares about that 😀 also i have removed all the carpets at this point and majority of the front panel since im getting ready to change the dreaded automatic. The gear lever, pedals clutch cable and the part that connects gear lever to the gearbox cost me only 60€ but i still haven't found anyone to remap the ecu. Also i removed the sunroof and did a very rough plexiglass job but i will redo that with a thicker piece. Hardest part was the form of my stub axles

And the unusual rear silencer!

From what i gathered the 3L had different, a lot harder but lighter drums and the pads should be different too and that must be the reason why mine went away in a week(handbrake in the corners in winter) and I’ve decided to just go all in with discs, I wont be throwing the drums away if anyone is interested in them anyway for that reason. As for the silencer i had no idea

That's a standard "walker brand" exhaust. Typical on diesel flavoured Lupos...

One of my SDIs has the same. Much more flowy than petrol powered editions. Plus a bigger bore pipe as well.

I don't know the rules where you live, but that could be rebuilt... And you know how to do it.

It could be, but it’s my daily and also I keep working on it meaning the work is never over because I don’t have enough time for it. I love it but a rebuild is only possible if I don’t have to build it back before leaving the garage. Also financially it’s not worth the risk, since a rebuild would cost around the price I paid for it whole… maybe keep it as a parts car since the body had very little rust all over. And as for the parts, the rubber on the wheel has some visible wear but nothing awful, paint is faded in places. And the tachometer is fully functional also the airbag is still in one piece

Oh and for what happened was theres new asphalt it was just slightly wet and I happened to look down after starting to accelerate from a green light, didn’t notice cars stopping just after they started moving. Rather than releasing the brakes(ABS is off at the moment since there are no brakes) and avoiding him fully to the right I couldn’t manoeuvre and smashed at around 30km/h ;D. Quite a jump I had
