Shane56
Hi all, every so often the engine management light comes on the dash, and I have taken note it's using a lot more petrol than normal. I get usually the top error on my OBD but it has not thrown another error. Anybody help??
Slammedrollerskate
Looks like you need a new downstream o2 sensor and an egr valve.
Shane56
Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty handy with mechanics, is this a job I can do myself??
Slammedrollerskate
Yea sure ,the egr is a bit fiddly but they're both easily done.
Shane56
Thanks are the parts readily available as eoro car parts don't sell them.

mk2
O2 sensor is fine. Check for air leaks. Whats the power like? Normal power or weak? And how's it idle/start?
Shane56
Will do, the power is normal , it just seems to be using a lot of petrol at the moment.
mk2
Can you check the live sensor data - the temp sensors, ideally when cold before starting after overnight. Should be the same reading. Might be a dodgy temp sensor AND something else... Assuming that the temp gauge reads normal once warmed up? Shane56
I will check that, I have noticed that the temp gauge sometimes works then it doesn't, could that be causing the problem??

cpcpeter
Don't buy a new EGR valve just yet. Give the thing a clean first and potentially save yourself some money. Very common for the valve to get coked up which could explain the range/performance error.
mk2
My hunch is the infamous temp sensor. Especially since the guage keeps dieing. That company in Luxembourg that manufactured them really should have gone under years ago. The amount of global problems they have caused across the entire VAG group range is really unbelievable. Shane56
MK2 going to try tomorrow so will let you know, fingers crossed.
Shane56
Changed the temp sensor and reset the Ecu after driving for 5 miles no light, but when I stopped the engine and restarted it the light came on again with the 2 faults. Looks like I need to clean the EGR valve to see if the cures it.
Shane56
Bought and fitted the EGR valve and the problem has gone away, but still throws up the o2 sensor, can anyone tell me if the front exhaust sensor is the same as the downstream o2 sensor?? mk2
Try leaving it for the mo. They're pretty tough sensors. Once you've taken it for a motorway run, chances are it'll be good again. Just needs a decent clean out.
Shane56
Cheers MK2 I have changed the air filter, I'm doing the oil and plugs as well as the oil filter tomorrow.
