Latest Part Number - Pedal Box

Recommended Posts

Just checking with the powers that be.
i believe I’m having early problems with my pedal box.
Crunches into reverse a few times, clutch pedal has around 2 inches on play from the top before it engages.

I was checking the latest part numbers and want to be sure I buy the right one.  I have read the how to guide.

6N2721115P - Bracket for pedal cluster

I used the 7zap catalogue.

My car is a 1.7 SDI 2004.
Im currently using the car to deliver takeaways. The wife got put on Furlough so need the car in tip top condition for the extra cash

That might be something else... The give away is when the clutch pedal rest position is lower than the brake pedal. And you get a creaking sound sometimes. Have you tried adjusting the nut on the end of the cable, on the clutch lever?

But yeah, right part number. Your local vdub dealer "might" sell a genuine one to you cheap, as they are very aware of the polo recall with the exact same pedal box.

Twenty years later they're not selling anything cheap.

Break out the welder if it is that.

Remember to reset the pedal first, not just weld it in the ****ed position.

Just found this old pic of a pedal box I'd removed and left outside in the skip. Shows the weld that breaks.

Ok so the clutch rest position is still at the at the same height as the other pedals, just doesn’t engage until 2 inches of press.

I haven’t adjusted anything

Got any pictures of where and how to adjust.
never done it before.

thanks as always

Sounds about normal. You could adjust the slop take-up spring on the end of the cable (in engine bay). Obvious when you see it. 10mm lock nut and a 13mm i think... Leave a bit of spring slop, as it stops the clutch release bearing wearing out too quickly.

Thanks I shall have a look.

if getting into reverse becomes a pain more and more. Is that a sign of the gearbox on its way out?

Usually a sign that the linkage is worn or slightly out of adjustment. Worth checking it.

Every single 085 gearbox linkage I've ever checked has had faults- mainly the rubber seal to the rubber ball cup fails, allowing muck in, wearing everything out. Sometimes the plastic linkages go loose (cheap to replace) or the shaft bearings.

There's a little slot with a 10mm lock nut that you can move up or down. I always slide it up a mm or two so it helps selecting reverse easier.

I posted my pedal box a few years back when I replaced it. It was hanging on for grim life by the time I removed it. It's a weak seam weld that goes. Rich is right you can repair it. I personally didn't trust myself to weld it properly (it's something I've never learnt, sadly). I can vouch for the new part but it's expensive. I think I paid £90 for mine? You can find them on eBay occasionally for cheap though.

Sorry. I had an image of all the linkages in my head... This'll help: (it's nut/bolt number 65 you want to loosen and slide up a mm)

It might have been less. I've not owned my SDI since 2016 and the pedal box went in about 2014.

Can't miss it. Get under the car, look up at the thingy that moves when the gear stick is moved. That's it... :)
