  1. 40%??? would you like to show your working out no doubt its better on juice and i can only imagine that it is totally different to drive (easier to get high mpg) as its hard work to get the absolute best out of tdi. there is always the bigger outlay in the first place but the longer you keep the car the more money it saves so if you change your car often you wont always get the benefit. im also with you on the cost saving, even with "just" a tdi. my weekly fuel bill has dropped by £110 :surprised:
  2. last tank in mine was 460 miles on 28 litres of fuel = 74.68mpg it is mapped and i never took it over 2000rpm . the higest i ever got was with hypermiling and that was 86mpg if i drive it normally and give it some stick (map means its quite rapid) i get about 65mpg
  3. 7k for brand new 3l !!!! thats a no brainer, keeping it for 11 years thats free motoring (as long as no big bills) but they dont make them new anymore and as they hold their price so well its cheaper to buy the 1.4tdi i would love a 3l (just because) and was actively looking to import, but potential big bills and residual values ment it was far more cost effective to get 1.4tdi if they were only 7k new and you can still get 5.5k 11 years later, that has to be the lowest depreciation of any car!
  4. stop using your car!!! NEVER put bigger fuse in they are a particular size for a reason, if the circuit has a 15a fuse its because that is the weakest link in case of a fault, by putting a bigger fuse in you have just made another part of the circuit the weakest part probably the wiring. if its blowing a 15a fuse you have a major fault fix it before your car catches fire!!!
  5. if you spend 3k more you save £30 a year. not sure if thats worth it
  6. if the "mechanic" plugged it in and read what it said then he must be right. just make sure that when he changes the injector and it turns out to be the loom that you tell him he said it was the injector. the fault codes are only the start to diagnose a problem not to be taken as gospel. the injectors dont need coding
  7. do some sums. if its only for economy,(cant see any other reason you would want one) then is the difference in price between a 1.4tdi and 3l going to cover the cost saving of fuel? 3l does about 90mpg 1.4tdi does about 75mpg, cost difference to buy car £3k. thats a lot of fuel also if it goes wrong it will be very expensive lots of special parts.
  8. check glow plugs sounds like ones dying or died,
  9. you need to get the codes read, if its an immobiliser problem it will show up as "engine start blocked by immobiliser" from there you can see if its a reader coil or key, it could be crank sensor, or it could be any number of things but save some time and money get the codes read
  10. i have these 29060092038 found them much better than the lens type as they spread the light better round the headlamp making them slighty brighter, the lens type i found just looked like a dot
  11. for that price the damage should only be a stone chip, thats over top dollar for an 02 even with the milage, i would expect it to be mint for that
  12. when it wont start does the glow plug light come on?
  13. is it factory sunroof? or aftermarket?
  14. 1970 vw beetle paid £300 from a garage! was a cracking car owned it 6 years it had 5 engines all panels replaced 2 resprays two interiors and eventually sold it for £2300 and bought a mk1 golf gti two weeks after i sold it police woke me up at 5 in the morning and were going to arrest me for drunk driving after the new owner had smashed it up and done a runner, my name was still on the dvla records, parents were not impressed,
  15. yes must use the pd spec oil, can bugger up the engine if not used. its readily available though and not that much more expensive, just keep on top of the services and no problems, mine has 120k on the clock and rising at 2k a month
  16. maximum towing weight is 800kg
  17. be carful fitting new switch there is a right way and a wrong way if you dont do it right you have to buy a new switch, there is a ratchet inside and although you can reset it it rarely works for long, so read up how to do it first it is really straight forward
  18. cars that tend to go up in value and become classics are usually ones that people wanted when they were new but couldnt afford them or even drive. as you become older you can buy your dream car you all ways wanted then its down to supply and demand that pushes the prices up. i dont think the gti ever had a massive following when it was new and even though it will always be a cult car there will never be massive demand to push the prices right up

  20. just spent a couple of hours replacing the switch on mine, it was completly worn out (happened to have a spare microswitch laying around) really easy to do following the instructions above, all back together and according to vag com the switch was now working, unfortunatly for me still no light, finally traced it to a broken wire in the loom so all working now, just in time to sell
  21. im just in the midle of doing this to mine have a look here http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?1542461-MKIV-door-locks-explained-why-you-re-having-problems!!!-%28 http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=77648 the arosa one im doing has the same part number and it seems to be a comon fault with vw locks, basically its the microswitch at the bottom with the red and blue wires that tells the car if the door is open or closed, just replace with new microswitch
  22. take the belt off and see if the alt clutch is seized when they go they make a god awful noise that is probably the most likely cause. its easier to take the alt off and use air wrench to whizz the bolt off to replace otherwise you need special tools
  23. i have never heard of these but they are now on the top of my list thanks
