Howells01
I have recently fitted coilovers to my car that have dropped it 60mm, but that isn't low enough for me. I have heard online that you can swap the coilover springs for new lowering springs/shorter springs to make it lower. Is this true? Can you replace these springs with new and shorter springs (lowering springs) to make the car lower: The springs look a bit weird cos the wheels are on full lock left so I could take a pic. Please help, thanks. VolkswagenDan
simplest way is to take the helpers and adjusters out. then you'll go lower.failing that, look into other solutions.Cut springs and cable ties ftw.

Sorry I'm a newbie with this lol. How much lower would I go if I removed them?
Blaine
if you look at the picture there is a blue platic ring with a spring that is under full compression under it, take the coilover apart and remove it,would go a fair bit lower
Howells01
Is that safe? Would that effect the ride at all?:/
Koop
Looks like it's fully compressed all the time there so if anything it may actually improve the ride slightly. Either way, it's safe. You can get custom springs made but you need to know your spring rates etc.
Howells01
Awesome. How would I go about removing it? Could I just take it to a garage and ask them to do it for me?
Koop
If you fitted them yourself you have the tools. Just take them off, take them apart & put them back together again without the helpers. Bish bash bosh.
Howells01
I took them to a garage! I'm sure it would be a simple job but I don't want to screw it up. I can just go to a garage and ask them to do it right?
Blaine
if you can't work on cars, i would advise against running them low full stop..
VolkswagenDan
if you can't work on cars, i would advise against running them low full stop..This is probably a fair shout, because smashing sumps is never cheap, especially not at a garage. What exactly did you ask to get done? Adjusters out? Helpers out? Both?
Tee17
Remove the helper spring (the compressed one) and unwind to desired height. Beware that you can only go so low before your anti roll bar starts rubbing on your driveshaft therefore making it impossible to drive. But as said above cable ties helped me get around this and im dropped roughly 120mm all round on stock 14 inch alloys. Hope this helps. Howells01
I just asked for them to remove the helper spring. The mechanic said he'd do it but it's not advised. I was thinking of just removing the adjusters instead of the helpers, as that seems safer haha. I don't want to go super low, so I won't be having any rubbing on the driveshaft problems. I'm putting 16s on within the next couple of weeks so I'll only be going as low as the top of the tyre. I should be fine. It just needs that extra 10-15mm drop. VolkswagenDan
That'll be fine then! Look forward to seeing pics.

Howells01
Cool, I'll put up some tomorrow then.Just quickly, is it completely safe/fine to remove the adjusters? Is it an easy job too?Sorry for the constant questions, I just want to know haha
VolkswagenDan
Awesome! That's ok buddy, it's what we're here for. It's perfectly safe but wait til you have the helpers out, try that, and if its still not low enough, remove adjusters! Howells01
Alright, I'll get that booked in sometime within the next two or so weeks then! I'll be sure to post pics tomorrow and in the future of what it looks like
Howells01
Yeah definitely! This is what it looks like atm. As you can see it could definitely do with more lows. I think removing the helper spring should set it nicely on 16s.
Tee17
I see you have an exhaust on there, any chance of a video starting up with some revs? Curious to hear looking good otherwise
