Anybody selling a GTI?

Looking at chopping in my 1.0 for a GTI in the next few weeks but the selection on all the usual sites seems poor. High miles and overpriced.

I'll consider anything below about 80k and have a fair budget. I'm willing to pay for a good one.

Let me know if you have/know anyone with one for sale.

Henry.

Contacted Piers?

Not sure on the miles on his GTI but you can be guaranteed it's been looked after.

Take a look on the 2nd/3rd page of the members cars - you should see it on there.

Cheers piers (lol)

MIght go look at this to see if i can knock the price down. Few bits of broken/worn trim i can see.

http://www.autotrade.../1500?logcode=p

you may also note the rare 3 seat rear bench. (i'd want to swap that out though)

The annoying part is i passed up a mint 60k one a few months back for 3.5k. Regrettable decision there.

138k! Nice going.

Mines currently a few hundred miles of 80k. Not bad for a car that's nearly 10 year old.

I find that with the Lupos being quite rare they're well looked after regardless of what mileage is on the clock.

You'll find one soon!

You'd be surprised, and possibly what you don't realise Henry is not all 'good conditioned' cars are necessarily low mileage cars. You'll often find higher mileage ones are only still on the road due to being looked after so well.

If its been serviced regularly and cared for there is no reason it shouldn't do a couple of hundred thousand miles, and on the other hand you could get a 70,000 car that seems mint with little/no service history that could snap a cam belt on the way home!

What I'm saying is mileage, depending on service history, should make very little difference to the car you buy, you could find a mint, straight lupo with 120,000 on the clock and dismiss it for a 50,000 lupo that seems spot on but has unreported damage on it with a twisted front end.

But whatever, get what you like!

Yeah fair enough Pete the high milage ones are looked after. My current car is high milage but well kept. My reason for wanting low mileage is the fact i do a lot of miles, so it's be nice to have something that won't roll over 140,000 miles a year from now.

We've never spoken so you're not to know, but i'm not an idiot. I have a fair idea of how to buy a car. Just that what I want to buy is a good condition, low-ish mileage car. I only posted the question because theres not very rich pickings on the usual sites. Didn't realise it'd spark such a debate.

If i were to moan about the whole thing. It'd be nice if one day people just answered the questions people ask on here, but human nature and whatnot.

I thought I was plenty helpful enough. Just advising you to widen your aspects and not be put off simply by mileage when it's not the be all and end all, you could get a nice example and enjoy it for what it is regardless. But hey, like I said, it's your money. Sorry for advising.

Did I say you weren't helpful? You raised some good points, maybe it's just that I've already considered them.

Me and my dad have this conversation all the time about how its better to buy a car thats actually been driven than one thats been used to go down the shop on a sunday morning then left on the drive the rest of the time.

Like I said I was only using the forum to expand my search. Obviously im not going to jump at the first person to say they've got a 50,000 miler for sale but it's another one to consider, and compare against the likes of this 127,000 mile one owner car on autotrader:

HERE

Probably an absolute peach, but as i intend on owning the car for a long time something with less miles is preferable. Maybe i'll have to re-think my position but in my mind 80,000 miles isnt that 'low milage' anyway. Average for the car is supposedly 90k.

I've always gone by 10,000 a year for average, so a 10 year old car has an average mileage of 100,000, my car is just over 10 years old, but has covered 84,000 so I consider that lower mileage. So the way I see it as they stopped being produced in 2005 then 70-80k is about an average mileage for the last of the gti's.

yeah i'd agree with that. Low mileage to me is 50k and below. Theres that 42k one up for sale that the guy wants 6500 for. Considering most of the what i'd call 'good' ones are about 5000 quid i don't see the low milage justifying a 1500 pound price increase.

The one im interested in is a 53 plate with 65k miles. That's be a good example of the sort of thing i'm after. Obviously i havnt viewed it so cant really make too much of a judgement.

With the cars being so rare it's hard to find anything near enough that it wouldn't feel like you're making a commitment already just to go an view it.

One has to remember it's not just the engine that's done the miles. Suspension and body work will be affected on an "uncorrected" car. If I were looking for one now I too would be looking for a low mile model.

My '54 plate (Dec ' 04) has 56k on the clock: I've had it since it was just under 2 ½ years old @26k and with preventive servicing she's sailed through every MOT.

Unfortunately for you I'm not selling as it fits your requirements. I also have an agreed first refusal if I were.

Good luck with your search. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.
