Pezza
Chaps,so i'm driving along yesterday in the rain when my dad rings. blah blah etc.. How's your new car? it's great dad. cant be VW quality.then as I'm on the phone I hear a faint clonk appear. in time with the wipers sweeping. when I stop I detect it's coming from the drivers side spindle area. Seems to be coming from under the plastic scuttle. anyone had this problem? serves me right for saying Vdubs are pukka! Also my car (04 GTI) has no threaded towing eye in the styrene boot holder. the handbook says it's an option. it says you need a wheel spanner to tighten it to the car but GTIs have no jack spanners or owt! Is this right? Cant see where the eye would screw into the front anyway.Puzzled Pezza style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
Crusoe
don't need a screw in towing eye on the Gti if you slide off one of the front bumper vertical bars the towing eye is hidden behind that. Not sure about the noise though
Snoopy
When my wipers started clonking, a close inspection revealed a stone in the axle mechanism area! Removing it fixed the problem. The front towing eye screws in behind one of the covers that split up the front lower grill - I forget if it's the left or the right cover. They pull off quite easily. Not sure whether you're supposed to have one, but I would have thought so...
Crusoe
@snoop, my gti had a built in towing loop under the cover, no need for a screw in.
chris260
My wipers were doing this the other day but it's stopped again now, this has reminded me that i was going to check them. When it happened on my mk1 it was because the motor wasn't bolted in tightly, so i was just assuming this might be something similar. If it's all tight i'll assume the stone theory! bossjohnc
Yes, and yes - it's already there under the cover on the offside
Pezza
Thanks for all answers. Whilst I could take car back to stealers I think I'll have a ganders at weekend. Does the plastic scuttle panel simply pull off when wipers are removed? If you dont have the knack you end up breaking these pesky jigsaw parts! Slicknick
Make sure you clip them back properly i have managed to lose both of them due to bloody speed bumps in my area !When i vist my folks i have to drive over 22 speed humps to get their, such a pain in the ass...Crusoe don't get any idea's ass lover.... Pezza
For those interested I had a look at the source of the annoying clonk. It was the bonnet cable which comes out the bulkhead and through the scuttle. Seems it was fouling the wiper crank. I little fettling and the noise is no more. So there you go!
