bun
im looking to start tuning my lupo gti in the next few months and i was woundering what ius the best thing to do tostart for extra power gains as i have a bmc cda filter with a powerflow cat back stainless system but i wanna get proper power i am looking into gettin the head ported and polished and a set of cams in it as well but i was woundering what sort of inlet manifold would be better for the car as ive been told the stanard one can be resrictive but i am also thinking of having it supercharged next year but want a bit more power for now to make it more fun any help would be muchly apprieciated cheers ben
Defcon5
May I suggest getting a new keyboard first, as your full stop key appears to be broken. If you are going to supercharge it next year, then a new exhaust manifold, sports cat and suspension would be all I would do for now - whats the point in buying stuff now only to get rid of it in 12 months time? Save the rest of your cash for the charger, as it will cost you an awful lot to do it properly Edited May 24, 2011 by Defcon5
bun
i know im looking at quite a bit for the chrager kit and for it to be fitted properly, i already have the car lowered on blisten coilovers but i just wanna get some more power for now as the supercharger isnt a definate for now just an idea
Defcon5
You will get used to the minimal increases in power very quickly. If you have a few hundred quid burning a hole in your pocket may suggest some driver training/track instruction? That will make you far quicker than any amount of mods
bun
true i do get were your coming from and for the supercharging it would you say forging the internals would be better to do straight away as then its already done for the later date of the potential for the bigger power increase or turning up the boost? In my mind i see it being better doing it all at once while im having it done even though it'll make it a bit more costly and i have a feeling your gonna say ive answered my own question but i want to get advice from people who have done it before or have looked more into it than me as all i know is i need a eaton m45 supercharger and one company told me id be looking at around the £3000 mark for just the charger and intercooler being fitted if i can get the charger for cheap, whic i doubt i will when it comes to me doing it unless i am very lucky
Pete
Definitely just save your money for the charge project, in my opinion there isn't much point modding a standard gti engine simply because it's n/a, if your charging it then that's another matter, but keeping it as it is with modified/updated parts just seems a waste. Your looking around a grand+ for the exhaust side of things and that's before you look into air filters and re-maps, so add on another 2-300 quid on top of that, and as you've mentioned the head flowing, so you're on your way to 2k with that little lot and you'll end up with about 20bhp more? Think that's what most of the owners on here who have done similar things with theirs are claiming, about 145-150 bhp. A lot of money for and extra 20bhp. Heyaxe
Do what im doing and install a k03 with 7psi of boost . You can get a k03 next to nothing on ebay and then you need a custom made manifold (unless you have money for the raceland manifold!). bun
yer but the reason i wanna run the supercharger is the elimination of the turbo lag and the need to convert it to low compression and well when put like that around 2 grand for 20 bhp sounds like money down the pan were as that could go towards the charger plus help a bit with sorting a mate of mine out with a few drinks who is good with engines but also im struggling with finding the company that are willing to sell em parts for the gti as ive rung about 4 up recently and they said sorry we dont do parts for the gti but if it was the 1.4 16v sport (100 bph one) i can sell you what ever you want just starting ot get a little annoying being told that really and as for sorftware i was gonna go to awesome or amd tunign to see what they can offer me i just dont wanna have to be told i need a stand alone as ive been told i shouldnt need one
CasperGTI
And why do you not need to lower the compression when using a supercharger?
bun
well it doesnt need lowering as much does it as ive been told i could just strap a supercharger on as it is now with it on a lower boost but i guess ill have to look into that a bit more or pic your brain about it as you have done it if thats all right with you
CasperGTI
Sorry, who told you this?
Pete
To be fair, unless you're like a rocket scientist like Casper(minimal exaggeration)and are planning on going down a eaton45 route, you're looking less than 200bhp, but with a conversion to a 1.8t I'm fairly sure the lag won't be an issue. Being honest I bloody love the feeling of piling on the revs and feeling the turbo spool up and kick in.
CasperGTI
Hardly a rocket scientist.... its not like i got it right.
Pete
Don't play coy, you're pretty much venturing into the unknown with your engine bay. But it's true, it's easier to chuck a turbo in a get massive power gains than go down the road you have, but it is a thing of beauty, well, when it's in one big bit anyways! 99hjhm
And why do you not need to lower the compression when using a supercharger?Maybe he's not connecting the supercharger up, like the other guy who did it. lol
bun
well i was only looking to hit around 200 bhp as i feel that would be plenty quick enough in the lupo and i cant remember what company said it but they said to put a super charger on it is less internal work then doing a turbo they said but im just not sure as all i want is more power than my mate who has a vts with 160bhp n ill be happy so i was just woundering what would be the better and some what quicker route to go down with tuning it
bun
also for the 1.8t dont you need to do alot of custom mouting and subframes for it to fit and alter the loom alot ?
Pete
Seems an awful lot of money just to keep up with your mate in his french-mobile, you'd be better off just buying a vts and just finding out who the better driver is. I obviously don't know for sure but it seems a fair guess that with the weight and horsepower difference even if you did the normal mods without the supercharger you'd still only slightly worry a vts, and if your mates tinkered with his and its 160bhp then you wouldn't stand much of a chance. If you're only doing this to keep up with your mates then you're gonna end up with no money..ever! There's always someone with a faster car! If you're doing it for a laugh or a project fair enough, but just to keep up with your mates seems a bit excessive. Your money though, just don't expect it to be a weekend job! bun
i understand were your coming from with what you say about keeping up with my mates as i know in a lupo ill never be able to as alot of them have scoobys n that. all i want is a bit more power as he is the only other one with a 1.6 but the other way to look at it like you said is ill end up with no money and i wouldnt mind gettin a skyline gtst when im 25, so the other way to look is do i throw money at a engine with limited capiblitys or do i wait n then throw money something with more potential. there is a company near derby who have quoted a re map or me and said they could get 140 out of it and they got an offer on at the minute for that map.
