Rightttt!

Here comes the bad news...

My car gave up on me in the week :( :( :(

I was driving it up a road when i heard a strange bang from the engine

It then decided to stick to 2K rpm and just wudnt go no more

Then a few seconds later it just revved its tits off on its own accord and an insane amount of white smoke came bellowing out the exhaust.

So i quickly shut it off and managed to crawl it to the side of the road.

Got the bonnet up and had a quick nose around but cudnt find anything but its seems the same symptomys of a blown turbo :(

I managed to get the AA to tow me home so i could investigate...

I stripped off the front so i could get to the intercooler

I then removed the pipe off the intercooler from the turbo,

about 0.5-1 litre of oil came poring out :|

And then when i removed the pipe completly off the turbo and this came out...

I found chunks of metal caught that obviously cudnt filter threw the intercooler

DSC_0056.jpg

And this was the state of the oil after the intercooler, looked like real small shards of metal :|

I then continued to take off all the inlet to see if i could find anything.

Cudnt find any bits of metal it was all just horribley clogged up with grime :|

I then dropped the downpipe and got the exhaust manifold off so i could get the turbo out

This is what i discoverd :|

I was pretty certain that it was the turbo that had gone

But im pretty sure this proves it aha

Only problem now is if it has sucked in any of the metal and damaged the internals :|

somebody's been using sh*t oil or not cooling the engine down after a thrash before turning it off !!

See this a lot on the PD engines! Must have been a pretty extreme case to happen to an AMF engine though!

also with that amount of oil passing from the turbo directly into the engine, it could well have bent a rod!

I havnt "abused" it or not know how to look after a turbo its just one of them things

Straight forward to change the turbo but im thinking isit worth it to find out the internals are frigged!

Full engine rebuild + new turbo... expensive. Good excuse to drop a 1.9TDi in though :).

Thats what i like to hear :) aha

Ive been looking into it, just really struggling to find out any information

That lad "PD150" has abit of information on here so i may just give it ago..

im going to post up a thread and if i can get enough info about it im gunna go for it

Only thing that scares me is the price :|

Just offset the price against what a replacement engine would be, won't be so painful to spend the money then :).

Jealous... especially as I wanted to get a VRS but couldn't insure it so that engine in a Lupo, even better a white one... Oh yes.

oh hell yes to a 1.9TDI this has just got more interesting.

Dam right, do it to your's too then would save you selling the car!

Your Mk1 + 1.9tdi = Do it.

In this instance, James talks sense :).

Turbo's can just go at any time

Obviously poo oil and ragging from cold cant help but who says the OP has done that??

Turbo went on my fathers wagon! Always warmed up and serviced every 4 weeks!

Things dont last forever

I'd love to mate would suit my driving style so well with a nice long ratio 5spd box, I just dont have the knowledge or tools at my disposal to get on with it :S

I need to use the car too often to have it laid up

Will watch this space closely it may well spur me on :D

From reading about him dropping the air ride whilst driving along and smashing the sump off  Dont know him personally, just know most of the punto forum hate him
