Recommendations on good garages to fix pedal boxes in Northants area?

I have been quoted over £1100 to fix my pedal box and clutch by VW Kettering which I just can't afford. Does anybody know any garages in the Northamptonshire area who do this job well and cheaper? They're quoting 8 hours labour at £80 an hour.

My dad is a self employed mobile mechanic, has been for the last 25 odd years.

He is a very honest bloke and works purely on word of mouth.

Hope that helps :)

His business number is 01327 844555. Think he is about 35 pound an hour? Not sure but he is a very honest bloke and works purely on word of mouth.

There's a guy on here called "little rich"... You should give him your Dads number.

Ah thank you! That sounds perfect. What's his name please? I don't want to ring up and ask for Marcus's daddy :P

Thanks Marcus! Just left a message and said you'd recommended him so I've got you some brownie points :P

I heard the message as his office is just below my room

He owes me now, maybe he'll let me off the phone bill?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've now had two local garages turning me down as they say the pedal box is too much work... really not impressed tbh as surely it's their job?! Anyone else be able to help me?! I now have all the parts and it's literally a case of fitting them. Any VW specialists in Northants?

I wrote a how to on this, and then im sure a another guy wrote one in more detail, tbh its not as hard as it makes out to be, just more awquad.

Aslong as you or a friend, or both are half decent with a spanner, and have the patience of a saint (those god damb sheer bolts) you should be alright.

If you need any more info or out just PM me.

It's taking the dash to bits that costs all the money, the part and the garage's labour charges to fit it probably only come to around £130.

If you can pull the dash apart yourself and feel confident you can put it all back together again too then you should be okay like Luke says!

You dont have to take the dash apart treblet, if memory serves me right its just the lower panel/cover (the actual dash brace thingy stays there which make access challenging) and then the cowlings round the steering wheel as well as the tray above the pedals and covers for UJ joint ect.

I have been a little bit more educated since i did it, and found that some techys prefer to take the steering wheel off and may be the height adjusting mechanism, and leaving it in one peice is the harder way to do things apperently but i prefer to lift it out all in one.

Marcus' dad not want to do it then ?

Nope he's too busy at the moment so I'm having to look elsewhere.

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I've never done anything mechanical on a car so I think it's gonna be too big a job for me. If anyone on the forum is confident doing it/helping me do it then I'll pay the petrol money and £250 for doing it...

Hi

have you tried to get VW to pay for the pedal box? there is a good will depending on how many miles, how old, how much service history and how much you fight!!

Dont get clutch done till pedal box fixed as there may well be no problem with clutch.

Cheers

rick
