Im looking to buy a Lupo GTI, are these the things I should be checking?

Rear spoiler bubbling links to high level brake light failure

3rd brake light leaking

Rear washer pipe breaking

Crank case breather

Heater matrix failing

Bonnet release lever works

Central Locking – Check it repeatedly

Electric windows – Make sure the open smoothly

Exhaust isnt blowing as it sits low (Check CAT)

Panels for dents – Aluminum body

Interior trim wear - Handles, Seats, Gear knob, Steering wheel?

Brake Squeel

Pedal box

Clutch pedal lower than brake pedal

Stiff gear change

Crunching into reverse

Hard to engage first

Clunky when moving 5th to 4th, 3rd to 2nd.

Very Low bite point.

Gear boxes (WHAT DO I CHECK/ AND HOW)????

Indicator stalks failing

Roof gutters rusting underside

Rear arch liners intact

Hesitant at just under 2krpm means you need a new coil pack and ht leads/ ECU update

If you know of any more thing to add to the list please help me out!

Many thanks,

Mathew

Technically it oxidises but that shouldn't be much of a worry though.

Where aluminium is mated to steel though problems are more likely to occur, as can be seen here http://www.h-e-l.co.uk/info/aluminium-fittings.htm

I haven't seen this on any lupo GTi's yet though. B)

Also check the headlights work properly!

It's nice to see someone actually doing their homework rather than just asking.

Gearbox - crunching in to reverse is pretty normal (unless excessive) as there's no synchro on reverse. Just watch out for a general stiff change, this is indicitave of failure IME. 1st gear is typically 'notchy' on the 6 speed box, not a worry, but possibly a haggling point.

Also check the rear spoiler (unique to the GTI) for any bubbling - this usually goes together with high brake light failure due to water leakage and saturation of the honeycomb body of the spoiler.

Aluminum won't rust as mentioned - and the ally panels on the GTI aren't welded in any way to the main body, so no problem there. Do check the rear arches, make sure arch liners are still intact etc.

Pedal box

Clutch pedal lower than brake pedal (GTi's don't suffer from the pedal box problem)

That is a very extensive list. Nice to see someone who has done a bit of research and put some thought into it :shades:

However, some of the things in the list are not really specific to the GTi, they are things you would check on any car, i.e. brake squeel, heater matrix etc. Perhaps we should use this to make a list of just GTi-specific items, and pin it for future reference??

Also check:

for a cambelt and waterpump change every 40k or 4 years

that the headlight washers on the xenons work (if they don't then it may be because the washer fluid level is too low; top it up and try again)

General items:

service history

brake fluid every 2 years

tyre treads
