Lupo FSI

According to this, the cause seems more likely to be due to poor maintenance:

Read that a long time ago, that site/thread's how i found out they were made by hilite. The electroshock treatment is a fairly recent discovery.

The FSI was built for economy, not performance. Hence the 0-60 time. Longer gears are the main reason, not the gear change. In fact the gearchange is quicker than you could possibly change manually. The gearchange components were made by a company called Hilite, who also supplied similar equipment, using the same technology, for the Ferrari 355 & 360, amongst others!

The gearbox is also not a DSG, just a lightened manual gearbox.

If that is the case, it must be radically different than the 3L's gearbox, cause that in all fairness, changes really slowly, far slower than you could do with a normal manual transmission, or what a normal VW DSG box does.

Are you sure that the slowness of your box is not due to low hydraulic pressure, caused by a failing accumulator (loss of nitrogen which permeates the membrane)?

Mine changes about the same as this A2 1,2tdi on this demonstration video about it from a danish Lupo 3L/A2 1.2tdi specialist. Look from 3.06 onwards, that is a small acceleration test with eco-mode in the off position.

Compared to this Skoda TDI with DSG

with much faster shift times. If the 3L is supposed to shift as quick or quicker than the Skoda, both my car and the two A2 1.2s ive driven (and possibly the dealers audi in the first clip?) may have had problems with the gearing. How do I check the pressure for accuracy? Only a handful of privately imported 3Ls in Norway, no little knowledge and support from VAG locally.

I would expect the DSG to be quicker, it has two clutches and costs a bit more!

If you switch on your ignition, without starting, put the gear lever in tiptronic mode and then change gear. You will find, or should find, that the gear change is almost instantaneous. Most of the lag is due to the throttle, which is normal for diesels, and not the actual gear change.

You can check the health of the hydraulic system by seeing how many changes you can achieve, as above, before the pump starts. Both our Lupo 3L's manage six. If your accumulator is original, it probably needs replacing. There is no diagnostic method I know for checking the accumulator, which is a weakness of the VAG system and why so much money is wasted on unnecessary replacements. I read on a German Lupo 3L site that over 90% of gear actuator replacements are unnecessary!
