Grinding noise whilst turning

Recommended Posts

Started to hear a grinding noise last night which I originally thought was my brakes, however I had a look at the pads and they seem to have a fair bit left. Also its only happening occaisionally and only when turning left.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be before I book it into the garage to get looked at??

Cheers

Just an idea. I'm not an expert, but that sound like a wheel bearing to me. Especially if it's only when turning one way and not the other. Never had it on my lupos but had the same with an Escort once.

Surely that would make the noise all the time I would have thought??

Its not from the steering wheel is it?

Hard to tell but to be honest it sounds like something is grinding whilst rotating rather than just a quick grind as I turn if that makes sense???

When you say turning........turning dirrection or the wheels simply turning when you move forward?

Bit of both as its whilst the car is moving but only happens when I turn the wheel, so its defintely a noise you'd associate with something rotating, and it definitely sounds like metal on metal

Nope but all much of a muchness. My guess would be the Constant velocity joint from the noise and circumstance you've described. Quite a common failure. Are you running aftermarket suspension?

Possible wheel bearing, a cv joint would more than likely be knocking rather than grinding. If there is any play in the bearing it will allow to wheel & disk to move out of symattery(sp?) and rub/grate against the carrier when under load at an angle.

jack the car up (the side the noise is coming from) start the car and put it in first and slowly lift you foot of the clutch. that'll get the wheels going, then moving the steering wheel to the left (full lock) and to the right. you should see/hear it squeal, like two bits of metal being pressed together. i pretty confident its just a wheel bearing.

don't know much but my about cars but my car makes the same sort of sound turning left & i need a new cv joint on the drivers side. so it's down to CV/wheel bearing or Track rod.

what is it with lupo CV joints. it's seems every time someone checks under my car it needs a new 1. but it is lowered 40mm on standard suspension lol

anyone know the cost for a new CV joint ?

sorry if thats hijacking this post
