Lupo Sport Pedal Box

I have Just had to spend out over £200 getting a new pedal box fitted to my Lupo. When the garage took out the old one they were appalled that Volkwagen even bothered to fit it in as the welding was well below adequate, apparently the new one was much better welded.

Does anyone know if VW have done a recall on the Lupo Sport for this reason? I bought my Lupo direct from a VW dealership and have never heard anything. If Volkwagen are putting Sub-Standard parts in then they really should be footing the bill.

Has anyone had any luck getting VW to cough up?

As you can tell I am a bit bitter about it, I love my lupo but am abit disappointed with VW at the mo! mad.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> mad.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

I had a 2000 Lupo Sport that the pedal box failed on after a conversation with the Service Manager of the local VW Dealership I got it changed under warrenty...by the time I had this done the car was 5 years old and out of any warrenty it was sold with, but I argued that the box was a faulty part and had I done more miles in the car it would have failed within the three year warrenty period!

I'm getting the dreaded squeak from the clutch pedal, SEAT have quoted £30 for part and ... £280+vat for the labour!! Trying to find out if SEAT UK are going to pay all/some of it. I've read through the old thread about this but can't seem to find anything on trying to weld it before it snaps. Is it possible to weld it without removing any major parts (ie just from under the car) or am I going to have to have the whole box replaced? Help help help,...

You have to remove the complet dash to get to the pedel box sad.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Thats why its so expencive.

Think I might cry. Is removing the dash something you would leave to the 'pros'?

Also would you trust an independant garage to carry out the work or would you pay the price and get it done at a dealer?

Thanks for the quick response...

Removing the dash isnt all that bad, but if your not sure what you are doing leave it to the pro's, also as much as I hate them I would take it to a main stealer to get the work done as they will know the problem and will have the data sheets to guide them through any probs

Thanks for your help mate, just hope they can get the part in stock before I am left stranded somewhere...

Knew I should have renewed that AA cover.

I had mine down at local garage as I'm sick of paying VW prices. Cost me about £26 for the part, about £160 labour, new brake pedal and VAT, about £220 in total. They seem to have done a good job, just time consuming as they have to take steering column and dash out to get to it.

Damn, just spend ages going through the 'pedal box' threads...

However I can't seem to find the answer to a couple of questions.

1. If the pedal box is on it's way out but hasn't actually broken yet can it 100% be welded back without the need for a whole new box?

2. If it can be welded, do the garage still have to take the dash/steering column etc out, meaning the labour will be the same as fitting a new box - just saving on the price of the part?

3. Do you need any other parts for the job i/e pedals or are the pedals still ok to use as long as they aren't snapped?

Would really appreciate it if someone could reply before I go to the garage at 4:15!!! biggrin.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

The pedel box can be welded.

Its the welds that brake on the standard items.

replaceing the box will meen a new box, that still has ***** welds.

The dash will still need to come out though. sad.gif style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Nice one Tigz, gonna ask them to weld the old one up - shame I've got a new pedal box sitting in my shed now!! When I rang up SEAT they said the box was not available in the UK and if I wanted one to be ordered in I had to pay for it then, was so worried I just paid for it - turned up yesterday, only ordered on Friday.. doh!

Quote from Framkie: "I have just fixed my old one. it looked like it was going to be a right ball ache to get the box out. would of had to drop the steering column. managed to repair it in place. I bolted the offending piece aswell, corner drill came in very handy there. "

I've also got a Lupo Sport (2000), just had the pedal box replaced at 70,000 miles. Didn't go to a VW dealer after I've had lots of trouble from them in the last year (not doing things they should have done, etc). Went to an independant VW specialist (Vagtech, Soulbury, Beds). Cost was £223 to do the job.

Since so many have had problems I do feel VW should have done this as a no-cost recall though.

  • 3 years later...

Im having the same problem. Iv jsut bought a 2000 lupo Sport, and there is a sqweek from the clutch pedal every time i go to change gear, thats followed by alot of swearing as i struggle to change gear.

Im hoping that i will be able to blag my local VW dealer and get them to splash out a bit, as i havnt got the money to get everything done at the moment.

What a pain!

I have had this problem with my 1.4s but as i brought it new from a company that import cars so tight sods like me can save money i fixed it myself , but only after i went to VW to order the part to find it was on back order 14 day wait ! .

So i got the bugger out and welded a nice support bracket to it then sand blasted it followed by a nice coating of satin black spent the weekend doing it though , its been OK now for 9 months or so .

lol so many topics.

the problem stems back to 1975 and the mk 1 golf, bassically the clutch cable on a mk1 golf used the bulk head as a platform , this used to split the bulkhead, a simple plate could be bought and the problem fixed in minutes.

the problem occurs as the cable is under strain ie pedal pressed to the floor, the gearboxes have not changed in design really and the failure on the lupo is down to the same fault.

i've had two repared out of good will free of charge and i have pointed others in the direction of our good dealer up here and they have had theres replaced free also, i even got a courtesy car.
