    Here's Hoping

now if that's not an invitation to open a can of worms....!
  2. if the diagnostics are correct and the engine is running too lean, could be anything that means the fuel air mix is wrong- too much air or not enough fuel. could be manifold leaks or related, or low fuel pressure, or something causing lack of fuel- but i'm guessing the car drives ok? just rubbish idle. my bet would be air is getting sucked in somewhere. so throttle is shutting right down, but the air is still too high.... check air and vacuum hoses.

welcome! The Gti is a fab car and certainly a future classic. but bear in mind, a Lupo is now a relatively old car compared to what you're used to. Enjoy all the little extra entertainment features during your ownership In fact, it is many of those discussed here, daily which is what gives our cars such character!
  4. you need to do more than just increase air throughput... if you throw more fuel in, with everything else stock to generate lots of black smoke, you'll get a fair bit more power, without even getting your hands dirty

    Will it fit?

you could fit a 3.6 VR6 FSI engine in the engine bay... oh, then add a vortex supercharger . you could get 800hp. Or instead of spending around 2k, buy a more powerful older car! IOW, keep it stock....
  6. they don't generally go wrong... what's up?
  7. that gear stick gaiter is neat. i like it.
  8. i like foreign number plates
  9. found this for you... https://nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/etka/volkswagen/lu/231/845000/ i think that the different versions are simply with or without heating elements and maybe glass tint strength. my guess is that any one will fit fine.
  10. yeah, could be the fan motor bearing... not come across it in a post '98 car. older vdubs often. you can feel if the central shaft has too much slack by moving it from side to side. there should be no movement. there are a couple of people on here breaking sdis...
  11. perfect car for a new driver! don't scrap it. there is a poor student out there with lots of time on their hands to fix it who would love this car. ok, so road tax is a killer compared to later cars, but 80mpg is always a winner. and low insurance too. a subframe would cost maybe £30 from a breakers yard. shame you're not nearer.
  12. what's the problem with the car? fans hardly ever fail on sdis....
  13. yeah, and it'd need crating up. but there are some good shipping companies out there who can do consolidated international freight. it works on volume instead of weight when sea freight. glass £10 (used). shipping £150ish? time 6wks. plus import tax?
  14. magnet and reed switch on stick?
  15. nice to know Ray is keeping an eye on all of us Septermber 1965. what an old geyser... that's vintage then. hmm?! Or is that my dad?
  16. even if full of oil? what's the reason rich? if rings, it'd be smokey. if leak, there'd be oil everywhere. if oil pump, it'd make a right racket. if completely worn out engine, there'd be oil pressure when cold and oil light would come on once the oil gets heated up and runny. but, you're right of course- if it were my car, i'd be out investigating. sadly @oprn can't check the car because it's two hours away from him. I'm guessing some numpty is just giving him news without much detail. creates more stress than being helpful....
  17. to be honest, i wouldn't worry about the oil light. statistically, it is very very unlikely for the engine to be running without any oil pressure. especially for the low milage it has. if the glass is still in place, a 'temporary' fix is to paint the entire glass with clear laquer to allow it to glue all the fragments together. or lots of tape. your thinking about being a write off, claiming insurance then buying it again at a lower price is my way.... until its registered, its just parts... no write off record! to get it through compliance, headlights, wing mirrors & tyres.
  18. yeah. if i had the cash, something like ab12. two letters followed by two digits. worth well over 100k. i'd put it on my rat car.
  19. you know where i live... you sent me your headlights which now adorn my black SDI. by the way, i never did update you- I wet'n'dryd them with some 600 grit then sprayed them with some 2k laquar. they look brand new cherry you might be able to see one of my red mk2s then. no street view here yet sadly.
  20. yes it is heated... you absolutely need it to be replaced at the earliest convenience. the longer the car is left open, the more likely the interior will deteriorate. damp, insects, dust, spores and who knows what else will find its way in. even if it is in a customs bonded warehouse. being a bonded window, it needs to be done by an expert. see if you can track down the part number. once they have that, they have no excuse. i'm curious- what would happen if the car was written off? what if they 'destroyed' it? would you get all your money back? what's the process if it all goes downhill? i might have an idea....
  21. it's true. every little detail is available to @danno and @mscherryviolet pm me when you're a winner!
  22. i think danno knows... the baby in the background was the giveaway
  23. there's a how-to lots of pics.
