I've installed very large oilite bushes ie 36" diameter and they last a long time under heavy load conditions. I would suspect that some other bushes were installed and failed. the right bushes come from a company called bearing boys in Norfolk and they're nowhere near £7.50 so check them out. I'm sure that's where skezza's link takes you. I would recommend them, they're sh*t hot on delivery. geoff

follow the black wire from around your ignition barrel it goes to a black box which is your immobiliser. it is usually screwed to the bottom part of the dash, unless of course someone with some sense has been in before you! best of.. geoff

thanks chaps it looks like I'm going to have to find the right switch, god only knows how much vw want for it, but I have an account with tps so i'll try them first. we have the old style of switches with the switch bank where the cup holder is but never mind i'll sort something . thank you geoff

can anybody send me a picture of where the electric mirror adjusters are on a gti? I've just made a set of electric mirrors from a pair of polo mirrors and a set of lupo stubbies, just need to know where stuff fits. couldn't afford to buy a set of gti mirrors so thought I'd try this. geoff

jesus! were you waiting for me to ask that question? that was quick! thanks. geoff

I've just changed the lupo's rear wiper for the smooth polo one, does anyone know the part numbers for the corresponding front replacements? save me some time please. geoff

A question for SDi owners about the exhaust
GeoffD replied to Paul's topic in Car Care, Maintenance and Mechanical
believe me it's not an mot fail I've de catted, blanked my egr and removed the intake trumpets. no engine about to die lights or nowt. diesels of our era do not require cats for mot- simple. Geoff. by the way I haven't been able to see properly, that's why I haven't been on, still can't. -
just a bit mate, I was going to comment on the photos, but have risen above it! geoff

must apologise to defcon5 for the deformation of character. my excuse is that I'd just come back from the eye infirmary and was quite blind when I was posting - I saw the red car and simply jumped to conclusion. by the way I am still blind, I haven't got It fixed yet, so my apologies for any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. geoff

Jacking a Lupo up on a trolley jack
GeoffD replied to T3LLIOTT's topic in Car Care, Maintenance and Mechanical
I usually manage to get my trolley jacks (2) on the bolts mounting the subframe. it's solid enough and then use axle stands where the subframe mounts the bottom arms. one trolley jack can lift the rear axle and put two axle stands under the rear axle mounts, simples! car off ground work done, reverse procedure. obviously if you've only got one trolley jack it takes a little longer. by the way the vw scissor jacks are shite, I took ours out of the boot and threw it in the garage, somewhere. I also have a fire brigade bag jack which is very useful, goes into places where you'd never get a trolley jack and on any surface , ideal when wheels come off, but that's another story. geoff -
yeah skezza and we haven't even looked under the bonnet at such things as chassis legs, suspension top mounts, inner wing damage or even bulkhead damage. I hate to seem dramatic but in a lot of instances it's like an iceberg - most of it is beneath the surface. yes it's fixable if you've got plenty money to chuck at it but I think an alignment check would be in order. is the car worth that much to you? bear in mind also if you break it to make sure that none of the parts you sell are dodgy too. geoff

the door locks are different between central locking and manual locking, although you could possibly use central locking units for manual locking, if you get what I mean. geoff

if the calipers are the same and do the same job, which after all is stopping your car, why worry about the colour? paint them yourself. yes its irritating, but I dare say the price difference between genuine gti calipers(painted red) from vw and the price of yours is considerable. unless of course the garage has charged you for the real thing and given you something inferior for the same money, then you've got something to twist about. to put the garages point of view, we get cars in with tit pink paint on them, we don't ring vw and ask them if they do calipers in tit pink! we naturally assume that the owner has seen fit to paint his calipers. when the calipers are rebuilt they are probably blasted, removing the red paint. it's probably not cost effective to paint them red. I don't think you should feel lied to by your garage, they've changed your caliper, job done. a lot of the time when you contact suppliers for calipers they themselves don't know they're supposed to be red so they can't pass the info on, unless you go to vw....and pay. the choice is yours. geoff

there's a little bit of room behind the liner, but the best way to find out is to just try taking it out, see how it goes. while you've got them out remember to clean all the shite out from the back of the sills, stops them rotting. top tip of the day! geoff

like it, and it's probably loads cheaper than the gti. I fitted a gti spoiler to our diesel lupo. they do fit, but drilling the two mounting holes can be tricky. you can just glue them on but I didn't like the sound of that. unfortunately they do hit the aerial, but you can live with that.geoff

I've used tinted laquer in the past, you can tint any colour you want, except blue and red of course for obvious reasons. geoff

I know the way vw extract more power from the pd engine, which is what yours is 3/4 of is by using a different turbo and intercooler. there are people on the site who know more than me about messing about with this - it's just a matter of finding them. a remap will probably increase your boost pressure on your std turbo. if I was you I'd guess the new turbo/intercooler route would be the way to go. or you could drop a seat cupra pd engine into it. now that would be worth watching. geoff

Tip when changing heater control bulb
GeoffD replied to Skezza's topic in Car Care, Maintenance and Mechanical
vw actually do recommend using a piece of window washer pipe, but I've found that a piece of silicon washer pipe is much better, it's nice and soft and seems to grab the bulb without much fuss. geoff -
I think that the non electric bit is the same as far as the aluminium bit is concerned and there are more of them about. geoff

the problem is almost certainly a tracking error due to the car being lowered. all of the suspension alignment is altered. you always have to track a car when you lower it. get your tracking done and your handling should improve. geoff

seriously??

ray, was that really necessary, there are children watching ! geoff

your English is a damn sight better than my Croatian matey. you would have to keep the 1.9 ecu with the 1.9 engine. as far as the driveshafts go I have no idea, it would depend on which gearbox you used. somebody has already done this on here, hopefully they will answer your question. geoff
