GTI Hunter

Hi all,

New here (posted in the Intro section) and on the hunt for a Lupo GTI.

I have to admit, these cars did not factor into my thught process before I started looking but having come across this interesting little car, it is growing on me.

I have joined here to find out a little more and hopefully get some advice from the Lupo community !

I am hoping to see one at the weekend and had a few questions:

- It is a 5 speed, should I be worried given the Polo rep ? Should I hold out for a 6 speed ? What is the difference when driving (other than extra gear ;) ) when driving between the two ?

- What kind of mileage can these engnes/drivetrain do before needing expensive work ?

- Is Red a good colour for these cars (I haven't seen on in the flesh yet) ?

- Other than rust on roof and checking the electric windows, are there any other common faults I should look/check for ?

Thanks for any help and advice you can provide

just popped mine up for sale in the classifieds but if your interested, raven blue (best colour and rare to!)

i wouldnt be too bothered about mileage so long as it has been well serviced and cambelt done at around 60k, buy on condition over mileage, as mine has 116k on it but it runs smoother and pulls harder than my mates which is on 82k.

common faults, door check strap, rear top led brake light not working (corroded connection), windows like you say (one of mine is tempremental), engine wise they are pretty solid cars though :)

i would always buy a 5 speed over a 6 speed because of the inherant gearbox problems that the 6 speed dosent suffer from, it will also be better when you come to sell the car as people avoid 5 speeds generally, i think the changeover is around 2001 (not 100% tho)

Hope that helps a little mate, and take a look at my ad in the classifieds if your interested :)

they are the funnest little cars out there, enjoy whatever you get :)

Thanks for your posts.

I will take a look at your car Jay. How many previous owners does it have ?

The car I am looking at is registered in April/May 2002 I think but it has the 5 speed box.

What are the issues/problems with the 5 speed on a Lupo - do the suffer the same problems as the Polo ?

Cars look good in red. Better in silver, but good in red.

as Phil said, no inherent problems with either gearbox.

Top end gearing is the same, just an additional split in between. I seen a website do a real life comparison between 5 and 6 speed box and whilst the 6 is quicker to a certain speed, the 5 speed caught up as there is one less gear change.

Nice red example in the classifieds at the mo'.

The Lupo GTI 5 speed does not share the same box or problems as the Polo GTI 5 speed.

Thanks Phil, that's good to know.

If they are both as reliable as each other, why do people make a big deal about the 6 speed ?

I don't supposed you are biased on the colour ;)
I saw the red in the cassifieds but unfortunately outside my price range :(

The 6 speed is just a slightly more involving driving experience, I wouldn't consider a 5 speed I was to buy another.

I see you have a 2001, I assume that is a 5 speed. Interesting comment. Why would you not consider another 5 speed ?

When did the 6 speed box start finding its way into the GTI ?

I have one for sale, high motorway commute mileage though. It has one previous keeper from new with fully documented history and the elusive heated leather. Its currently in the local specialist having a new cambelt and waterpump fitted plus fuel pump which had developed a whine. Its also got a new clutch, new brakes and refurbished gun metal grey Bathurst wheels. Its an 02 6 speeder in moon silver. I took it in p/x for my ford racing puma last week.

Are all your cars red CHFS ?

Nice collection of Porsches. I take it they are for tracks ?

Not all red but lupo, 964 RS and CLA AMG are red and look the best.

968CS is maritime blue which really suits the car.

CC is white as no cost option on car list!

You'll not be disappointed with GTI. I have had stealers after it but it will only leave if it is going to a good home.

I may store it for a few years and see how prices go. It worked on the RS.

The 964 looks great in red. I do like those and storing it has definitely worked. In fact all air cooled pork has appreciated dramatically over the last 3-4 years.

I saw your one in the clasifieds but unfortunately it is outside my price range. I only want to spend an absolute max. of £3k. I already have 3 other cars I need to love and care for, this is a little personal luxury for me.

I was looking at Clio 172/182 but they ar a bit of a boy racer car compared to the Lupo.

My first choice is a Clio Williams but finding a good one that is not rusty is tough and I have all but given up
