went on a decent drive today...

over 300 miles...

the lupo gti did rather well

on the motorway i sat at 80 all the way (sat nav reading 75mph)

then on a roads just at the 60 limit...

car did 310 miles until the red light! a good 70-80 miles more than i usually get.... i thought the fuel gauge had broken

worked it out and it seems around 43-44mpg :shades:

well chuffed with that... think i might have got high 40's or maybe 50 if id cooled my jets on the Mway and sat at an indicated 70mph... around 65mph in real terms

I drove from coventry to Wales (130 miles) last week at 60mph the whole way.

I still had OVER a quarter of a tank in it when i arrived!

Normally i sit at 90mph and it takes just over a half tank. It makes a huge difference just changing your speed by 20mph or so.

My 4 branch manifold/decat seems to have improved fuel economy!

351 was the most i saw from my Arosa, that was the day i got my new custom gearbox fitted. 5th gear all the way from Kent to cumbria 70-75mph at 2500 revs.

Custom gearbox sounds exciting, did it set you back a lot?

I really wish my GTI revved lower in 6th or had a 7th gear to be used on motorways only.

£495 plus my old gearbox.

Worth every penny, old gearbox had a very hard life realy. Survived 93k somehow though.

That's very interesting, I may well consider talking to whoever did yours about getting a custom 'box for mine, seems a reasonable price!

Do you mind me asking who did yours?

At 80mph in 6th its nearly touching 4k revs lol

I know, it's mental, I'm sure there's room for an 'overdrive' 7th gear to bring it down to 3000 or less.

The 1.4 75BHP models rev at exactly 3000rpm at 70mph and I thought that was spot on.

GTI's are pretty good if you just cruise steadily.

A few times I've had 97 miles before the needle moved off full. Really annoyed it didn't quite make it to the 100 mile mark.

And I'm sure I've had about 350 miles til the light came on.

Just sit at a constant 70mph on a long drive and it's surprising.
