Do lupos have a oil breather that circulates back into the air box, if they do it could be because of this.

How much oil did you find

Yeah they have a breather that goes into the right hand side of the airbox.

There was a thread a while back about sports using a fair bit of oil, lots of people have found the same.

exhaust valve stem seals!

that sounds fairly expensive have a friend who is much more mechanically minded than me coming over to have a look so hope he can shed some light on the issue, Any more ideas of what possible problem it could be?

trust me mate this is what it will be its a common lupo problem i destroyed my sport engine because of this, conrod snapped and seized the piston in the cylinder head ground out the crank and bent every valve through oil starvation and extreme heat build up. mine went on the motorway coming home from gti international at 90mph very scarry indeed just imagine kaboom! id just had a full oil change done 3 days before and there was not a drop in it when it went, i wish id have been given some advice maybe i wouldnt have driven it and i wouldnt have been a couple of grand it cost for a new engine out of pocket, take my advice stop driving it get it looked at and put right or its goodbye engine and goodbye money!

There have been cases of some 1.4 16v engines ahving piston ring trouble. That causes excessive oil use.

How many niles has it done, and what engine code is it?

Its an AFK engine and it's done 62000 miles, Had a friend look over briefly yesterday and it not oil coming out of exhaust its more like carbon deposit but i'm literally putting around half a litre of oil every 200 miles or so i guess the head will have to come off at some point soon. Thing is it seems like its running fine sits at right temp and revs spot on but obviously something is not right..... :(

Ours is AFK with 44k miles. There was a little oil in the airbox when I had it off, but not much, and it rarely needs topping up, but then again it gets changed at 3k mile intervals (once year or thereabouts- the car does low miles). Does yours smoke at all?

If you wash out the airbox and breather with carb cleaner, does the oil build up again? I suppose it must be going *somewhere*. :(

Mine is my daily drive so just taking it easy atm an check the oil most days as now worry but all seems fine just really gotta get the oil loss problem sorted as its anoying though. Does smoke a bit but seems better once warm gonna check airbox again as was oily though not that bad but cleaned it so would like to no how much has got in.

My Lupo Sport is the same. It's done 62k and it sounds a bit like a diesel when it starts up, once its warm it sounds alright. It's going through a quite a bit of oil i've noticed it more when going over 60mph where the engine speed is about 3.5k revs. What is this likely to be Piston Rings or exhaust valve stem seals? How much approx would it cost to fix this?

There seems to be carbon deposits on the exhaust not oil and it doesn't produce blue smoke either.

Took my car to a local VW specialist in the week and he says its the piston rings and quoted me in the region of 600 - 700 but hopefully be able to get it done by a friend for a bit cheaper but will see i have the same carbon deposits on the back of my car gets all up the back when on a longer drive but just using it for short journeys till sorted.

Now you say about the deisel thing mine sounds like this on cold start too.

Also the guy said he used to work for VW and they would usually change the small block as its easier for them but obviously more expensive for us.

OOPS LOGGED IN AT WORK ITS SHEPS NOT DANN :D

1.4 VW engines do have issues. You are lucky if VW will do rings for £600. They quoted oil usage at something like 1L every 1500Km.... and that was when they were new!!! The sump only holds 3.2. so it's very worring. My cousins Golf(1.4) had oil burning issues, failed the emissions test on the MOT, The MOT place said they had some special stuff what they put in the fuel... This destroyed the rings in around 20 mins of revving at the MOT place to warm the engine, looked on the dipstick... No oil. When we phoned around engine reconditioners, they knew all about this type of engine, and didn't want to know. The crank cant be removed from the block, because when the main bearing cap bolts are removed, the block destorts. :( Valve stem seals are also a issue and piston slap. Ended up buying a smashed one owner car from ebay just for the engine.

They wanted 1500 for a recon engine... But didn't want to gaurantee it.

not VW that qouted 600 its a VW specialist the guy that runs it used to be a mechanic at vw. :)

But from what you say outcome looks poor but the guy seemed to think he could sort it

Right! Rings will improve things, and do the stem seals whilst he is there with the head off... he needs the right tools though.

sounds like a plan, though i am tempted by an engine swap, but would really like to try and save this engine for now. Anyone know of good companies to use if i go down the swap route? ideally in the midlands/warwickshire :D

maybe feeling a gti or 1.8t swap anyone point me in the direction of a specialist in midlands :)

get your wallet out you could probably sell your car and buy an early gti for the sort of money most places would charge for a conversion
