CJlupo
I am still confused about all these tyre sizes lol im not the smartest of ppl
Nicki
Yes.195 is the width of the tyre, 40 is the profile of the tyre, 16 is the diameter of the wheel.6.5J wheel is 6.5" wide (and the same width as the standard wheels on a GTI) and therefore 195mm tyre width is ideal.Obviously this assumes the wheel is a 16" diameter wheel! One thing to remember with tyres is the rolling radius - if you alter it too much, you'll alter the accuracy of your speedo (and your fuel economy too). This is a handy resource for working out the variance on your rolling radius. When considering whether a different wheel will fit the car, you also need to consider the offset of the wheel. CJlupo
Thanks alot niki i understand now. great help says when my speedo reads 60mph ill actually be travelling at 59.7mphThats good enough for me!Cheers
scotty_82
You usually find the faster you go the more it is out , saying that you should only really need it to be accurate to say 70-80 as 99% of the time you will be well within that speed
CJlupo
One more question. The alloys im buying are 4 stud and used to be on a ford fiesta. does anyone know the PCD? i think it might be 4x108 and if this is right is there any way i could still fit them? CJlupo
adaptors & possibly spiggot rings http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/pro...?product=499659Do these change PCD and bore aswell? I cant seem to find adaptors for ford wheels (4x108) to fit on VW ones (4x100) anywhere. any ideas? :/ Edited January 22, 2009 by CJlupo
CJlupo
Maybe get vw (4x100) to audi (4x108) wheel adaptors and get spiggots for the center bore since the audi ones still only have 57.1mm center bore? Would that work?
IDGM
No. You want to fit Ford rims to a VW. The adaptors work VW to Audi. You could get some made up though at a machine shop.
CJlupo
Ok, if i was to get 15" alloys could i just use the standard 205/40/15 tyres untill i could afford new ones? probably the most idiotic question in the world but most people who have 15" wheels have got 195/40/15's ? However I read somewhere on a brake, wheel, tyre thread on another forum that for safety reasons you shouldn't really go 3% oversize as it will effect your braking efficiency. It's 3.3% oversize if you standard set up is 155/70/13", but only 1.1% if it's 185/55/14".I ran 185/60/14"s which are 5.6% over for a coupole of years without any problems, but that car was/is only used for todling around, with a rare motorway trip.Though it's now sitting on 165/60/13" which make it 3.5% reduced from standard! Feels much better in acceleration and braking R

From what ive gathered people use 195/45/15 cos its cheaper or something like that?

From what ive gathered people use 195/45/15 cos its cheaper or something like that?If you look at this utility ( http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html ) it will give you the amount your speedo will be out @ 60mph with different tyre sizes. EaRNi!
fords tend to have much lower offsets, paired with adaptors is going to mean major arch work
